Queens Memory events in Ridgewood

Hello all, and happy summer! Queens Memory will be holding two community history events in the coming weeks at the Ridgewood branch of Queens Public Library. The first, Ridgewood Through the Years, will be an afternoon of story-sharing about the past, present and future of Ridgewood. Examine historic photos of the community from the library's collections, and bring your own family's stories and photos to share. This event will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 2 to 4 pm. We will be back in Ridgewood the following Thursday, June 13, for a free oral history training workshop! You will learn how to prepare for an interview, ask good questions, make a high-quality recording, and submit your completed interview to the library. The evening will also feature a discussion of several current and upcoming Queens Memory projects. This session will take place from 6 to 8 pm. Both events are free and open to the public; the Ridgewood library is located at 20-12 Madison Street, Ridgewood, NY. Do you have a bit of math phobia? Do you think some of your students have some math phobia? Would you love to help your students feel more comfortable with numbers in everyday life? The Center for Teaching & Learning is offering an intensive hands-on workshop where you learn ways to include numbers in every subject area, identify student fears and help students overcome them and gain comfort in using numbers in everyday life, in their classes, and in their writing. PT Interim Program Manager for Center For Ethnic, Racial, and Religious Understanding

The Center for Ethnic, Racial and Religious Understanding (CERRU) at Queens College CUNY is looking for a highly motivated, detail oriented individual to work with us part time as a Program Manager. Individual will work with us five hours a week 5/20/2019-8/15/2019, and ten hours a week 8/15/2019-12/23/2019. Hourly rate to be negotiated commensurate with experience. The program manager will take the lead on designing and implementing CERRU programming during the first half of its 10th Anniversary year. This year will include extra exciting programming such as a summit like event called the “Innovation Exchange,” which will focus on “Re-Imagining Leadership”, as well as CERRU’s 10th Anniversary Gala. Hours can be negotiated around other scheduling issues. Some hours must be worked on the Queens College campus, particularly in the fall. Responsibilities Include: ● Oversee all aspects of event planning and implementation, including liaising with vendors and speakers. ● Work with CERRU staff and students to design and develop calendar of events. ● Oversee development of two large events: CERRU’s Innovation Exchange and CERRU’s 10th Anniversary Gala. ● Contact and maintain relationships with speakers and collaborating organizations. ● Develop content and resource packets for informational use at events. ● Work in close collaboration with Communications Coordinator. Teaching Tip: “Best Practices for Crafting Multiple Choice Questions”

Multiple choice questions are a good way to quickly determine students' basic understanding of the class material. They also standardize grading and can be less work to grade. This week's Teaching Tip is "Best Practices for Crafting Multiple Choice Questions." The tip describes components of a multiple choice question and provides key guidelines for writing an effective one. Queens College uses the Scantron system for automated grading. Next: - Choose a form. There are two different Scantron forms available for use. To help you decide which form to use, click on this link: http://bit.ly/which-scantron-should-i-use - Then fill in an answer key. An example of each type of key can be found here: http://bit.ly/scantron-overview - Once your students have completed the test and you have an answer key, take the test sheets to one of the campus Scantron grading locations and follow these instructions for operating the Scantron machine: http://bit.ly/using-scantron. >From the Center for Teaching & Learning: The Queens College Center for Teaching & Learning presents "An Introduction to Manifold," led by Krystyna Michael (CUNY Graduate Center). Date: Wednesday, May 8 Time: 3-4:30 pm Location: Rosenthal Library 227 (second floor) This presentation introduces Manifold, an intuitive, collaborative, open-source platform for scholarly publishing. Using Manifold, instructors can publish dynamic course editions of public domain texts and open educational resources along with supplementary notes, files, images, videos, interactive content, or other resources in a single project, and it supports collaborative annotations, so you and your students can "meet" in the margins of your texts. Participants will learn about Manifold, review model uses of Manifold across CUNY, and receive information about how to get started publishing on the platform. We will also discuss how the development of Manifold at the Graduate Center is part of an initiative to build open infrastructure at CUNY that supports open digital pedagogy. Open digital pedagogy often uses Open Educational Resources (OER) and connects the classroom to the outside world through teaching practices that harness free and open digital tools to facilitate active and networked learning.
