Call for Presentations: Teaching & Learning Showcase, November 2, 2018

Celebrate fall and excellence in teaching at Queens College by sharing your practice at the Center for Teaching & Learning's fifth annual teaching and learning showcase on Friday, November 2 from 10 am to 3 pm. The event will include presentations from faculty and students on engaging teaching practices and learning experiences. Consider presenting any teaching practice you have found to be effective and engaging. We encourage you to include your students in your presentation. Presentations will be 20 minutes each, including Q&A time. In the afternoon, we will showcase the Quantitative Reasoning Across the Curriculum project from the past four years. We encourage the QR Fellows to submit proposals for presentation. Please send us a 100-150 word description of your practice or your students' experience of it, and why you think it's effective. The deadline for submission is Friday, October 12. Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education: The Case of Palestinian Citizens of the State of Israel

Dear Colleagues, Please join the Department of Urban Studies, the Department of Sociology, the Division of Social Sciences, and the Center for Ethnic, Racial and Religious Understanding for a discussion regarding the challenges of Diversity and Inclusion within the Israeli context. The discussion will focus on efforts of two change makers to create an inclusive space within higher education for Palestinian citizens of the State of Israel. We will hear from Professor Mona Khoury-Kassabri, who has recently been named Dean of the School of Social Work at Hebrew University, and Dr. Sarah Ozacky-Lazar, Director of the Forum for the Promotion of Arab Society in Israeli Academia at the Van Leer Institute in Israel. President Matos Rodriguez will offer opening remarks. The event will be held in the President's Conference Room #2 in the Rosenthal Library from 12:15-2:00 on Thursday September 27th. Assistance with Fulbright Applications

Dear All, I hope everyone has had an enjoyable and productive summer and a good start to the new semester. I have the pleasure of working with our students and alumni/ae on Fulbright applications at this time of the year, and would appreciate your assistance. Each student who applies through a college must have a campus evaluation as part of his/her application. Since Fulbright does not interview candidates, campuses are asked to provide the evaluation based on a committee interview with each applicant. I am looking for additional committee members to evaluate applications to teach English in Taiwan, Spain and Korea. If you are interested, I can provide more details individually, but generally, the commitment involves reading the application materials, which consist of biographical information, transcripts, recommendations and two one-page essays, and joining us for a one-hour meeting for each student. We hope to conduct all interviews between September 17th and 28th, so that students can make final revisions by Fulbright's October 9th deadline. If you are available to help with this, please let me know which country you are interested in and some days and times that would work well for you to meet. Queens Memory Archives Tour & Volunteer Meetup

Happy new semester, everyone! Queens Memory is pleased to invite you to our first "Volunteers in the Vaults" gathering of the new school year! We'll meet next Wednesday, September 12, at the Queens Central Library<http://www.queenslibrary.org/event/volunteers-in-the-vaults-hosted-by-the-a…> in Jamaica, from 6 to 8 pm. Volunteers in the Vaults is a bi-monthly open house for anyone interested in learning about upcoming Queens Memory programs and opportunities. First, we will have a guided tour of the Queens Library archives, with a display of some specially selected artifacts by one of our staff archivists. Attendees will then have a chance to discuss possible Queens-related oral history projects and network with Queens Memory volunteers and staff. Queens Memory is jointly sponsored by the Queens Library and Queens College. Faculty are welcome to come discuss ideas for class oral history projects.
