Teaching Portfolios Workshop, March 9

Teaching Portfolios provide evidence of teaching from a variety of sources and allow for reflection on, and improvement of, one’s teaching over time. Creating a public, professional view of one’s teaching as a scholarly activity can be useful for job applications, promotions, and tenure review as well as one’s own pedagogical research. On Friday, March 9, the Queens College Center for Teaching & Learning will be conducting a workshop on creating an online Teaching Portfolio. In the morning, we will cover teaching statements/philosophy in depth and the general architecture of a portfolio, then transition into a hands-on technical workshop in the afternoon where participants will set up a portfolio website and begin populating it with content. At the end of the workshop you can expect to: - Understand what elements constitute a professional portfolio - Create a strong draft of your teaching statement - Walk away with the architecture for a website to house your portfolio and an understanding of how to get your content into it. Please join the Queens College Art Center for the opening reception of Art of Enlightenment: Tibetan Thangka Paintings by Gyaltsen Jampa, on view from January 29 - March 30, 2018. When: Thursday, February 15; 5:30 - 7:30pm Where: Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library, Level 6 Art of Enlightenment celebrates the centuries-old Buddhist tradition of thangka painting with the work of contemporary Tibetan artist, Gyaltsen Jampa. As sacred objects and themselves the products of a highly-skilled and spiritual practice,thangka scrolls depict a deity, scene, or mandala, a representation of the cosmos, from Tibetan Buddhism. Their vividly-detailed surfaces not only function as visual tools, teaching about a deity, influential figure, historical event, or central Buddhist concept, but also serve as devotional images incorporated into ceremony, ritual, or prayer. The thangka's highest purpose, however, is as a vehicle of transcendence-a meditative tool to aid in a practitioner's journey toward spiritual Enlightenment. Curated by Charles Daniels.? Dear Faculty and Staff! I would like to ask for your help in inviting students to apply for CUNY Service Corps at Queens College. We are a talent pipeline program that recruits, selects and hires students to serve as ambassadors to CUNY, while also serving their community. With 100 community partners, our students get to work 12 hours per week, for 24 weeks at $15 per hour. We have a highly competitive admission criteria, and our students also receive 13 hours of pre-service training, plus monthly professional and personal workshop series. Our application criteria is based on a 2.5 and above GPA, full time class load, undergraduate or graduate, and with two full semesters left in college before graduation. STUDENTS AS TEACHERS: LEVERAGING YOUTH VOICE FOR ACADEMIC AND CIVIC LEARNING Wednesday, February, 28th 4:45-6:45 pm (Pizza served at 4:35 pm) President’s Conference Room 2, Rosenthal Library, Queens College This interactive session will encourage participants to think about Youth Participatory Action Research as a curricular and pedagogical model that centers youth voice as part of a humanizing pedagogy in schools. Presenters share their expertise in leveraging dialogue, inquiry, and performance as pedagogical strategies for engaging the academic and civic identities of students. As part of the Cyphers for Justice and QC College Now program, a team of high school youth, researchers, pre-service teachers, and university instructors came together to co-develop and direct research projects that featured exploration of social issues such as the impact of testing on students, the role of culturally relevant curriculum on student motivation, and violence in schools. This intergenerational approach leveraged Youth Participatory Action Research and culturally responsive methodologies to center youth as experts and advocates to enact change in their communities and their immediate educational contexts. Dr. Danielle Filipiak received her PhD in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and will be starting a tenure track position this fall as Assistant Professor of English Education at the University of Connecticut. Danielle’s publications and research interests span the fields of critical adolescent literacies, teacher education, and digital literacies. Dr. Limarys Caraballo is an assistant professor in the Secondary Education department at Queens College, and in the Urban Education program at The Graduate Center. Her research interests include the impact of youth research on teachers’ curriculum and pedagogy. Dr. Caraballo directs the Complicated Conversations Series to encourage conversation among students, faculty, and staff in a diverse campus context. Free Oral History Training Workshop

The workshop will cover such topics as interviewing techniques, recording technology and the creation of timecode outlines, and will offer some time to practice your skills. Teaching Foreign Languages to Immigrant Students in Insecure Times, March 2

Recent proposals to reverse immigration policies are creating a climate of insecurity among immigrant communities and negatively impacting segments of the students we teach. Heightened pedagogical awareness and the application of cultural sensibilities toward the learning needs of students experiencing increased vulnerability are needed now more than ever. This workshop aims to share recent pedagogical research on teaching immigrant communities, specifically as it applies to foreign language instruction, and deliver experiential strategies and a suite of exercises that are immediately applicable to the foreign language and intensive writing classroom.
