Hello all! Queens Memory is pleased to invite you to our last "Volunteers in the Vaults" gathering of the year! We'll meet on Wednesday, November 14, in the Archives Reading Room at Queens Central Library<http://www.queenslibrary.org/event/volunteers-in-the-vaults-hosted-by-the-q…> in Jamaica, from 6 to 8 pm. Volunteers in the Vaults is a bi-monthly open house for anyone interested in learning about upcoming Queens Memory programs and opportunities. First, the Archives staff will share some treasures from the library's local history collections and take any questions you have about neighborhood history. ?Attendees will then have a chance to discuss possible Queens-related oral history projects and network with Queens Memory volunteers and staff. Queens Memory is jointly sponsored by the Queens Library and Queens College. Faculty are welcome to come discuss ideas for class oral history projects. Best, Moira The Beinecke Scholarship provides support for academically gifted juniors at partner institutions (including Queens College) planning to pursue graduate studies in the arts, humanities or social sciences. The award provides $4000 of initial support to assist with the graduate school application process, then a total of $30,000 over the first two years of graduate study. Eligibility includes U.S. Citizenship or U.S. nationality from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and a record of receiving need-based financial aid as an undergraduate. . Please join the Center for Teaching & Learning, the CUNY Disability Programs office, and CAST Professional Learning for an online training seminar on Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL provides faculty with practical strategies and techniques to ensure that all learners can meet high expectations. In this introductory course, participants learn the research basis for UDL, practical applications of UDL to course planning, and helpful technology tools that support flexible, inclusive instruction. This online training workshop will help you in teaching all students, including those with disabilities, and you will come away with simple, practical tips to implement in your classroom. Evening Readings at Queens College

The Fall 2018 season for the most prestigious literary programming in Queens has officially begun. The Queens College Evening Readings series presents award-winning and renowned writers, to begin Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00 PM in Choral Room 264 in Lefrak Concert Hall and is free to all CUNY faculty and students. We hope you will join us, as well as help us spread the word by sharing with your contacts of interest. In November 2010, Doubleday published Frank: The Voice, the first volume of Kaplan's definitive biography of Frank Sinatra. The book was also chosen by former New York Times chief book critic Michiko Kakutani as one of her Top Ten Books of 2010. In Spring 2019 Yale University Press will publish Kaplan's Irving Berlin: New York Genius, as part of its Jewish Lives series. Tuesday, November 13, Ricky Riccardi will discuss the last 25 years of the life and career of Louis Armstrong. These were Armstrong's most popular years but in the jazz world, many critics spent those years criticizing Armstrong for "going commercial," for "selling out," for being an "Uncle Tom" and more. Riccardi's bookWhat a Wonderful World: The Magic of Louis Armstrong's Later Years refuted those claims, often using Armstrong's own words to defend himself. Tuesday, December 11, award-winning author Jennifer Egan will read from her novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, which won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Los Angeles Times book prize. Her newest novel Manhattan Beach has been awarded the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and was long listed for the National Book Award.

Using Google Docs allows you to collaborate online asynchronously; comment on student work; and track student activity.
