Exhibition Opening: The Fabric of Cultures - Systems in the Making

Dear colleagues, It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Art Center's latest exhibition, The Fabric of Cultures: Systems in the Making: Exhibition: October 5 - December 15, 2017 M-TH, 9am - 8pm; F 9am - 5pm, when classes are in session Opening Reception: Thursday, October 12, 2017 5:30-8:00pm The Fabric of Cultures: Systems in the Making brings together artists, designers, CUNY students and local communities to reflect on the art of making, craftsmanship and technology in a globalized world. The exhibition calls attention to the larger systems that influence the state of fashion, craft and aesthetics and are constantly under development, and in flux. This new branch of the Fabric of Cultures project (http://fabricofcultures.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu) considers the new Made in Italy within a transnational context and in conversation with other cultures and traditions. The Fabric of Cultures is part of a larger, partly digital, pedagogic and research project directed by Eugenia Paulicelli, Professor of Italian at Queens College and Director of Fashion Studies at the Graduate Center. Greetings, Celebrate fall and excellence in teaching at Queens College by sharing your practice at the Center for Teaching & Learning’s fifth annual teaching and learning showcase on October 27, 2017, from 10am to 4pm. The event will include presentations from faculty and students, on engaging teaching practices and learning experiences. Consider presenting any teaching practice you have found to be effective and engaging. We encourage you to include your students in your presentation. Presentations will be 20 minutes each, including Q&A time. Please send us a 100-150 word description of your practice or your students’ experience of it, and why you think it’s effective. The deadline for submission is Friday, October 13. Free Screening of Pomonok Documentary!

Hello all, Queens Memory is happy to co-sponsor a free screening of the independent documentary, Pomonok Dreams, on Sunday, October 15 (3-5 pm). The film, which was recently featured at the Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema at the Queens Museum, focuses on the history of the Pomonok Public Housing project, located just across Kissena Boulevard from the Queens College campus. Filmmakers Alan Stark and Terry Katz, lifelong Queens residents and educators who grew up in Pomonok, will be on hand along with other guests for a post-screening discussion. Queens Memory Archives Tour & Volunteer Meetup

Hi all, Sorry for the last-minute notice, but Queens Memory will hold our next "Volunteers in the Vaults" event tomorrow -- Tuesday, September 12 -- at the Queens Central Library in Jamaica, from 6 to 8 pm. Volunteers in the Vaults is a bi-monthly open house aimed at current and potential Queens Memory volunteers interested in learning about our programs and opportunities. In the first hour, we will have a guided tour of the Queens Library archives, with a display of some specially selected artifacts by one of our staff archivists. Then, we'll gather to discuss upcoming oral history projects and Queens Memory events, and brainstorm ideas for future programs. Light refreshments will be served. Queens Memory is jointly sponsored by the Queens Library and Queens College. Faculty are welcome to come discuss ideas for class oral history projects.
