Summer internships with American Debate League

Greetings, everyone: The American Debate League (ADL, http://www.americandebateleague.org/) works with middle and high schools to train students to debate. ADL is currently recruiting interns to serve as coaches in summer camps we will host at QC. Interns don't need to have experience in debate teams, pay is $12/hr, and classes are 9am to 3pm Monday through Friday. Intern training will take place at QC in June. Please join the QC Art Center for a free screening of Just a Link (Un Simple Maillon, 2003) Tuesday, May 16, 2017 5:30-7:30 pm Rosenthal 230 Second screening of "Just a Link" (Un Simple Maillon, directed by Frederic Dumont and Bernard Balteau, 53 mins., 2003), a documentary about the women of the Belgian Jewish Defense Committee who saved thousands of children during the Nazi occupation of Belgium. Among others, the film highlights the story of Andree Geulen, one of the 27 Resisters featured in Resistance and Memory in Belgium, 1940-1945: Multiple Narratives, on view at the Queens College Art Center on the 6th Floor of Rosenthal Library until May 26. Chang(ing) Together: Exploring the Possibilities of Youth-Driven Research? in Teaching and Learning Tuesday May 9th, 2017 4:45-6:45 pm (Pizza served at 4:35 pm) 4:45-6:45 pm Dining Hall, Patio Room College Now and Cyphers for Justice youth from high schools around the city, along with CUNY preservice teachers, researchers, university professors, teaching artists and community activists, came together to co-develop and direct research projects that featured exploration of social issues including the impact of standardized testing, culturally relevant curriculum, and environmental justice. This interactive session will expose participants to Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) as a pedagogy, a methodology, and a critical epistemology that can be leveraged in educational contexts to promote powerful learning. Youth researchers, pre-service teachers, and teacher educators will discuss their experiences in a collaborative, youth-centered research initiative and offer suggestions for adapting YPAR in both informal and formal educational settings. Danielle Filipiak is a doctoral candidate in English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her publications and research interests span the fields of critical adolescent literacies, teacher education, and digital literacies. Limarys Caraballo is an assistant professor of English Education at Queens College. Her research interests include the impact of youth research on teachers' curriculum and pedagogy. Dr. Caraballo directs the Complicated Conversations Series to encourage conversation among students, faculty, and staff in a diverse campus context. Hi all, The Queens Memory program will hold our next "Volunteers in the Vaults" event on Tuesday, May 16, at the Central Queens Library in Jamaica, from 6 to 8 pm. Volunteers in the Vaults is a bi-monthly open house aimed at current and potential Queens Memory volunteers interested in learning about our programs and opportunities. Attendees will have the chance to discuss possible Queens-related oral history projects and network with Queens Memory staff. This program is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. Both full- and part-time faculty are encouraged to apply. This four-session series will be co-facilitated by Meredith Reitman, Principal, Reitman Research and Strategy, and Michelle Fraboni, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning and Lecturer in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education. Participants will actively engage with faculty peers across disciplines through facilitated discussions about teaching and learning, motivated by selected readings from two books: * Ambrose, Susan A., Michael W. Bridges, Michele DiPietro, Marsha C. Lovett, Marie K. Norman. 2010. How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass. * Merriam, Sharan B., Rosemary S. Caffarella, Lisa M. Baumgartner. 2007. Learning in Adulthood: A Comprehensive Guide. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley. The program is intended to encourage greater reflection on andragogical practices, exploring in depth how students learn to determine how best to teach. By the end of the series, we expect participants will be able to identify theories and principles of learning as they relate to college students, and QC students in particular, and to have developed a greater understanding of research-based strategies to improve student learning. Facilitator Bio: Meredith Reitman, Ph.D., Principal, Reitman Research and Strategy Meredith Reitman is the President of Reitman Research and Strategy, which provides research and evaluation services to nonprofits, universities, and government agencies. Dr. Reitman started her academic career as a faculty member in the Geography Department at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Her research relied on feminist geography and critical race theory to explore the role of race in workplace belonging and exclusion. She then transitioned to a career in evaluation and assessment, working with New York City-based nonprofits, universities, and agencies to investigate whether and how they were reaching their stated outcomes in education, housing, health and employment. She recently served as the Director of Assessment for Hunter College, holding a joint position as Co-Director of Hunter's Center for Teaching and Learning.

Please note: Here is the updated link for the application: https://goo.gl/2cBhwO Call for participation: Adjunct Teaching Task Force One of the ongoing functions of the Center for Teaching and Learning (http://ctl.qc.cuny.edu/) is collecting information to help improve teaching resources at Queens College. At this time, we are seeking input from our part-time faculty, since they teach a large number of courses at Queens. This call is for participants in a task force that will offer advice on how part-time faculty might share teaching practices and propose mechanisms for improving teaching services. The Adjunct Teaching Task Force was first convened in November 2010. After working together for a year, the group produced a report with recommendations for providing better teaching support for adjunct faculty. As a result, a number of resources were created to help support adjunct faculty, including a resource site (http://ctl.qc.cuny.edu/adjuncts) an adjunct faculty work space in King Hall 109 (http://ctl.qc.cuny.edu/adjunct-space-kh109/) the adjunct faculty handbook (http://ctl.qc.cuny.edu/files/2014/01/AdjunctHandbook.pdf) the QC Adjunct Google Group (https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/qc-adjuncts) and the Teaching Circle Blog (http://teachingcircle.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu/) We are looking to reconvene the Adjunct Teaching Task Force and are recruiting eight to ten members, representing all four divisions of the College, including long-serving adjuncts as well as graduate teaching fellows. Of the group, four team leaders will be selected to facilitate organization among the other members of the task force around the objectives of (1) technology, (2) space, (3) classroom issues, (4), faculty development, (5) campus relations, and (6) teaching materials. The objective of this task force will be to evaluate the success of the measures recommended by the previous task force and, if necessary, make new recommendations. Participation requires attendance at a meeting on Tuesday, May 23 to launch the task force and meet the others on the team, as well as a six-month commitment (September 2017 through February 2018) to compile information, communicate regularly with task force members via an online forum, and help produce monthly reports to the Center for Teaching and Learning. Participating part-time faculty will receive an iPad mini for their work on the task force.
