Queens College, the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline, and The New York Code and Design Academy have partnered to deliver the Tech Talent Pipeline Residency Program for its Summer cohort 2017. This program is designed to enhance your learning as a Web Developer by providing real world experience in the technology sector. On *WEDNESDAY 2/1 AT 12:15 PM IN THE CAMPBELL DOME* (refreshments provided) there will be an information session with the new QC chapter of Generation Citizen, and some program and contact information is included below. FROM LAUREN LOFTIN, QC CHAPTER LIAISON: Generation Citizen strengthens our nation's democracy by empowering young people to solve problems in their own communities through a rigorous action-civics course. Students choose a personally relevant issue of concern, analyze the root causes of the problem, and work in collaboration with their mentors and teachers to develop a definitive plan of action. The program operates in a real-world lab, beyond the textbook, where action meets civics. The curriculum cultivates critical-thinking and strategic decision-making skills, and builds self-esteem. Generation Citizen strives to teach students that a truly democratic society is one in which every citizen - no matter their race, gender or income level - has a voice and the potential to make positive change; and that every student experiences a "moment of empowerment" where they see firsthand the positive strength of their voice and commitment and recognize their responsibility to be an effective and engaged citizen. Our core program model is made possible through the tireless work of our college volunteers called Democracy Coaches. DC's are dedicated and energetic leaders who are committed to extending their learning and influence beyond their college campuses, as they spend a semester coaching students in utilizing their own voices to drive civic change. Democracy Coaches commit 6-8 hours a week preparing lesson plans, teach two 60 minute classes per week, and engaging in weekly on campus chapter meetings. All Democracy Coaches will receive a $300 stipend for travel and incidentals, and will be eligible to receive an $840 stipend for the Spring Semester. Queens Memory Event on School Integration

Hello all, This coming Thursday, Jan. 26, Queens Memory and the Queens Borough President's Office will co-host a panel discussion on the historic school pairing programs at P.S. 92 and P.S. 149 in Jackson Heights and P.S. 127 and P.S. 148 in Corona/East Elmhurst in the 1960s. The panel will be led by Susie Tanenbaum, director of immigrant and inter-cultural affairs at the Queens Borough President's Office, and Democratic District Leader Maureen Allen. Panelists will include parents and students who experienced these programs. The event will be held at the Langston Hughes Library in Corona from 6 to 8 pm; light refreshments will be served. Queens Memory Flushing History Panel

Hello all, On Saturday, Jan. 21, Queens Memory will host a panel discussion on the history and future of development and growth in downtown Flushing. Queens College Professor of Urban Studies Tarry Hum will contribute her expertise on this subject to the panel, which will be moderated by Philip Kasinitz, chair of the CUNY Graduate Center's Sociology program. Other panelists will be John Choe, executive director of the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce, and Irving Poy, director of planning and development with the Queens Borough President's Office. The panel will be held at the Flushing Library from 2 to 4 pm, and a similar event will be held the following day in Mandarin. See flyer attached for more details -- hope to see you there!
