Dear Colleagues, I'm writing to inform you about an exciting event as part of the Year of South Africa. For two weeks this semester (February 3-February 13), South African theatre artists Amy Jephta and her husband Sanjin Muftic will visit campus. During this time they will work with students and faculty, conducting workshops and discussing South African theatre practices. All of this work will culminate in a public presentation on February 11 in the Little Theatre, King Hall 115 during free hour. I would love if you could attend and help spread the word to your students and fellow colleagues. A flyer is attached. Pre-Health mixer

The QC MAPS organization will be hosting a Pre-Medical mixer on Tuesday February 10, 2015 from 6:30-9pm. There will be a panel of medical students from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine and Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of medicine to answer any questions that students may have. It'll be an excellent opportunity to get pointers from medical students on how they can make themselves a competitive applicant and to learn more about life as a medical school student. It will be a fun-filled event with music, dinner, and a raffle for a grand prize of a *FREE Kaplan MCAT online test prep course*, valued up to $1899.00! Students sometimes bring up difficult issues in class, and with the after effects of the battle between Israel and Hamas and the shootings of Black men in Ferguson, Staten Island, and other parts of the United States, honing your skills in facilitating constructive conversations in the classroom is more important than ever. Join Sophia McGee and John Vogelsang, from QC’s Center for Ethnic, Racial, & Religious Understanding (CERRU) for a four-session workshop series designed to help you develop and augment your skills in facilitating constructive conversations. The workshop series is open to all Queens College faculty (full- and part-time). Sessions will take place in Queens Hall 325, on at 6:30pm – 8:00pm on Thursdays, February 26, March 19, March 26, and April 16. POWER in AMERICA IS THE UNITED STATES STILL A DEMOCRACY?² Political Science 222 (81524) Tues/Th 3:10-4:25 PH 121 Professor Michael Krasner Is the United States still a representative democracy--a government that is responsive to the peopleor has it become an oligarchy, a government that is responsive to the few who are rich? Recent trends, including the huge (sometimes secret) campaign contributions (³dark money²) made by wealthy individuals and corporations, the corporate capture of the agencies meant to regulate them, the failure of the federal government to prosecute a single person responsible for the gigantic frauds that produced the Great Recession, the Supreme Court¹s decision to allot First Amendment rights to corporations make this a serious, urgent issue. Likewise, post 9/11 actions of the executive branch of the federal government such as the extra-judicial murder of American citizens, the kidnapping (³rendition²) and torture practiced by the CIA, the CIA¹s spying on the Senate Intelligence Committee, the provision in the Defense Authorization Act that allows the military to detain American citizens indefinitely without charge, all raise the question as to whether the expansion of federal power has fundamentally eroded the civil liberties that distinguish a democracy from an authoritarian state. This course will use films such as ³Potemkin,² ³Burn!,² ³Z,² ³The Battle of Algiers,² ³Triumph of the Will,² and ³Madison² to explore the causes of revolution and the forces that shape them, including the reasons why a social crisis sometimes produces a revolution of the right and sometimes a revolution of the left. The course will also consider the results of revolutionwhether and why they achieve their goals or not.
