Dear colleagues, Please share information below on the CUNY Service Corps program. Applications are currently open and will remain open to students till March 31st. The CUNY Service Corps is open to current full-time undergraduate and graduate students: The CUNY Service Corps is a CUNY-wide initiative where students can engage in a meaningful service experience throughout New York City, while building up their professional resume and career networks, and get paid $12.00 per hour for a commitment of 24 weeks during the academic year. With over 90 community partners, a peer cohort of over 800 CUNY students, and eight CUNY campuses participating in the program, your potential professional network and service projects are diverse and expansive! Students who would like to learn more about the CUNY Service Corps should visit the campus Service Corps office at Kiely Hall 111-M, or attend an upcoming information session: * Tuesday, March 4th, 5:00pm-6:15pm, Powdermaker 115 * Monday, March 10th, 12:15-1:30pm, Rosenthal Library 230 The application for the 2014-2015 cohort is now open <http://www.cuny.edu/site/servicecorps/students-form.html> and students are encouraged to apply! The CUNY Service Corps focuses on the following for areas: * A Healthier City: Corps members address important community and public health issues, such as chronic disease management, childhood obesity, lead poisoning prevention, infant mortality, violence prevention, nutrition, and food security. * A More Resilient and Greener City: Corps members support projects related to improving the city’s built and green infrastructure and making it more resistant to storm-related damage. * A Better Educated City: Corps members offer valuable supports to students of all ages, such as those in early childhood programs (and their families and caretakers), public middle and high school students, fellow CUNY students struggling with academic and personal challenges, and adult students learning English or preparing to take the High School Equivalency examination. * An Economically Stronger City: Corps members focus on small business development, local budgeting, fundraising for nonprofits and community issues, financial literacy as well as helping eligible families to access tax credits in order to bolster the economic viability and success of distressed communities within the city. United Nations Academic Impact Student Essay Contest June 25-29, 2014: Winners Participate in a 5 day Global Youth Forum in New York and present their work at the United Nations Headquarters on June 27th. Write an essay (2,000 words or less) discussing the ideas of global citizenship and understanding and the role that multilingual ability can play in fostering these. Your essay should reflect your academic, cultural and national context. Entries must be in an official language of the United Nations that is not the entrant's first language or language of instruction in her or her primary or secondary education. The official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. Entrants must be full-time university students, sponsored by a Faculty Member of University Representative, and must be 18 years of age or older. "A Sociologist's Inside View of the Digital Revolution in Publishing" A presentation by Dana Weinberg (QC Department of Sociology) Wednesday, February 26 (12:15-1:30 pm), Powdermaker Hall 351 Lunch will be served Self-publishing has profoundly democratized the publishing industry, enabling anyone with web access to publish a book. But what has really changed for authors, publishers, and readers, and what does it mean for what books get published and for authors' careers? Sociologist Dana Beth Weinberg has studied the changing book industry over the past five years as both a researcher with unprecedented access to industry data and as a novelist navigating career and publishing decisions. The range of narratives extends from seventeenth--‐century letters of Henrique Dias, a black soldier in the war against the Dutch, to contemporary oral--‐history life narratives of the political leadership of the Brazilian new quilombos.
