Take care, Dr. Rivera LESTER SCHWARTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR SCHOOL COUNSELING STUDENTS Dr. Lester Schwartz was a professor at Queens College and the coordinator of the counseling program for many decades. He earned his PhD in counseling psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University and worked in schools serving children in high need communities. Dr. Schwartz focused on training professional school counselors and supporting children's social-emotional development. His published books in career counseling (The Career Finder) are still in use today. Dr. Schwartz's dedication to the college and the counseling program was evident by his continued service as coordinator and adjunct instructor for many years after his formal retirement. He was deeply respected and appreciated by the department faculty who knew him. IN HONOR OF HIS MEMORY, THE SCHWARTZ FAMILY HAS ESTABLISHED A SCHOLARSHIP FOR SCHOOL COUNSELING GRADUATE STUDENTS The gift will be used to provide scholarship awards each academic year for graduate students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing a Masters of Science degree in school counseling. In addition to financial need, recipients will demonstrate a strong commitment to the social-emotional development of children, with a focus on children in under-served communities. * The amount of the award will be approximately $750 and must be applied toward QC tuition or administrative costs. * Graduate students in good standing (including GPA 3.0 or above) who are matriculated in the QC School Counseling M.S.Ed. program are eligible. * Applicants must submit a 2-page essay including the following (a) commitment to the social-emotional development of youth (b) experience with, or importance of working in under-served communities (c) a brief statement of financial need. Support your statements with examples of current or past counseling-teaching related experience (such as practicum/internship placements, employment, volunteer work or other evidence of commitment) * On the COVER PAGE- include name, year in program, full-part time status, and current GPA. * SUBMIT the essay to Ms. Shaneeza Gulmahamad, Administrative Assistant at shaneeza.gulmahamad@qc.cuny.edu.
