[SADivision 0305] CUNY Organizational Updates: Enrollment Management and Student Affairs
Good evening Student Affairs, As Adam is currently on vacation until Monday, August 19, please take some time to read the e-mail below from Chancellor Matos Rodríguez. Adam will be more than happy discuss the potential impact of these changes at the September 5 meeting. Dear Colleagues, I write with important news about leadership transitions and organizational changes related to our University's Office of Enrollment Strategy & Management (OESM) and the Office of Student Affairs. Thank you to Laura Bruno As many of you already know, our esteemed colleague, Ms. Laura Bruno, recently announced that, effective August 13, she will step down from the position of assistant vice chancellor for Enrollment Strategy and Management to seize an exciting new professional opportunity outside of The City University of New York. Prior to joining the Central Office 18 months ago, she had served CUNY for almost a decade, first at York College as associate director of Admissions, and then at Queensborough Community College as dean of Enrollment Management. She also held positions at The New School for Social Research and the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities. Given Laura's legacy of leadership, it should surprise no one that I am saddened to see such an invaluable colleague leave. But I know that - precisely because of how much we appreciate what she has done on behalf of our University - I can count on you joining me in celebrating her accomplishments and wishing her and her family well as they embark on a new phase of her professional career. Organizational Changes Having shared the news about Laura's departure, let me now turn to the news about organizational changes. For the past few months - as we planned our transition into our current roles - the University Provost, José Luis Cruz, Chief Operating Officer, Hector Batista, and I started a series of conversations about how to best organize the University's work to ensure we were well positioned for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Our conversations were not only informed by our own lived experiences, but also by what we heard from myriad stakeholders during our respective listening tours. Enrollment Management will now report to the University Provost The balance of these discussions suggested that because the linkages between our enrollment management and financial planning efforts have been duly cemented under the leadership of Laura and senior vice chancellor Matt Sapienza, it was now time to focus on the connections between enrollment management and our curriculum renewal, program revitalization, academic momentum, and career engagement efforts. As a result, we determined that one of the first changes we would make to the University's organizational structure would be to once again have the Enrollment Management Council and the units currently ascribed to OESM report to the University Provost. Our plan was to announce this change when the fall 2019 class was seated, but given Laura's impending last day at CUNY, we decided it would be best to move forward with the reporting changes now to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Furthermore, I have accepted a series of recommendations put forth by the University Provost to take a holistic view of the structures, portfolios, and interactions of the various units that comprise the Office of Academic Affairs with an eye toward streamlining processes, reallocating resources, and better serving our 25 campuses. Specific Changes including Chris Rosa appointed Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Inclusion Initiatives First, effective immediately, the University Provost will personally convene the Enrollment Management Council and the Student Affairs Council, in addition to the Academic Council. This will help ensure the coherence of the efforts driven by these important University bodies and enhance the ability of the central office staff to better support them. Second, effective September 1, Chris Rosa, interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, will assume the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Inclusion Initiatives. In this position, Chris will continue to be a member of the University Provost's Cabinet and exercise direct leadership responsibilities for University initiatives geared toward maintaining and sustaining a climate of inclusive excellence. As a nationally recognized expert, Chris will do much to sharpen our University's focus on this most important goal. We thank him for his leadership as interim vice chancellor. Third, the University Provost will develop, in consultation with the corresponding stakeholders, recommendations to better integrate the efforts currently led by the units ascribed to OESM and the Office of Student Affairs. Pending the completion of this work and the search for corresponding leadership, the University Provost will directly supervise these units, support the University Student Senate, and staff the Student Affairs committee of the Board of Trustees. Conclusion I am confident that the above changes will do much to better align our organizational resources with our institutional priorities. The fact that our University Provost has previously served as the Chief Student Affairs Officer of a University system and has overseen enrollment management efforts from that vantage point as well as from that of a campus provost and college president bodes well for the transition ahead.
