Subject: Breast Cancer Awareness Month Fund Raiser FUN! As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by this disease. National Denim Day, founded eleven years ago, is the largest single-day fundraiser aimed towards the fight against breast cancer. To date, more than $61 million dollars have been raised. To expand upon this idea, The Office of Human Resources is sponsoring "Denim Fridays" for the month of October. In order to raise funds for this cause, the cost of participation is $5.00 for each Friday that one participates, with all proceeds going to the Lee National Denim Day Foundation. Participants are allowed to wear jeans to work for every Friday that they choose to participate. For example, five dollars will allow you to dress down one Friday, ten dollars for two, etc. Since there are five Fridays in October, and knowing how everyone loves a bargain, we are offering a discount of 5 Fridays for $20.00. All responding participants will have a "pink patch" with their name on them display in the hallway outside OHR in Kiely Hall. We accept cash, credit cards and checks made payable to the Lee National Denim Day Foundation. The first 100 to respond will receive a pink ribbon pin to proudly display their contribution. As an added bonus, on the final Friday in October (31stth), anyone who visits OHR in costume is invited to participate in a Best Costume Contest. As all participants from years past can tell you, it is a lot of fun and our winners can attest to the wonderful prizes! Get together as a department and show the rest of the QC Community that you care! If you already wear jeans to work, then make them count! If you don't dress down, here's your chance. Sharing, Be well, Jennifer Applications for the 2015 Women's Forum of New York $10,000 Education Awards are now available for women of Queens College. We ask your assistance in steering the attached information to the attention of directors of those departments or programs enrolling mature women (Women's Studies, Adult Degree Programs, etc) so they can shepherd well deserving women through the application process. Please make both attached application and information sheet available to mature women with strong academic records who have overcome adversity to return to school late in life to fulfill their dream of a college education. The deadline for the application and supporting material is December 1, 2014. Please emphasize to your students that the application must be accessed and completed electronically on the Education Fund tab of our website at www.womensforumny.org<http://www.womensforumny.org>. The website also provides three videos describing our mission and introducing you to some of our former awardees. The purpose of the Women's Forum Education Award is to encourage mature women to realize their own potential and to contribute significantly to their communities. Awards of $10,000 will be given in 2015 to women over 35 who, after interrupting their education due to life's adversities, are now pursuing their first associate or bachelor degree. The adversity one has overcome will be a major factor in the selection process. Applicants must demonstrate noteworthy promise and resilience in the face of challenges and demonstrate a commitment to helping others and to making a difference in their community, when their own career goals are achieved. Financial need is not the primary determining factor in the selection of recipients, although true financial need should be in evidence. Applicants must be residents of New York City, attend colleges in New York City at least part-time and have at least nine credits remaining after June 2015 to complete their degree. Support for the Education Award is provided by members and friends of the Women's Forum, a leadership organization of pre-eminent professional women. We are extremely proud to have distributed $150,000 in 2014 and over $900,000 to over 165 mature women of need over the years. In the past six years, we have proudly presented 4 awards to Queens College students and hope to see the number of applications increase this year. In order to comply with these new requirements, CUNY assembled a working group of lawyers, student affairs professionals and other administrators who have been meeting frequently to determine how to revise CUNY's Bylaws and policies to bring them into compliance with the new federal mandates. Article XV of the Board of Trustees Bylaws- which relates to student disciplinary action-is one such document that is being amended to incorporate requirements contained in the new federal guidelines. There are also continuing and re-entry students who still have yet to register. Given this, we are writing to you to request your assistance during this time period. Beginning on the first day of school (August 28th), the Advising Center staff will be exclusively devoted to the remaining incoming freshmen and transfers who have not yet attended an orientation program. We will hold new student orientation programs three times a day from the first day of school to the last day to add classes (September 3rd). In order to do so, we will invoke the established 'triage plan' for the other categories of students (detailed below): 1) Continuing students (currently-matriculated Queens College students) 2) Re-entries 3) Incoming freshmen and transfers WHO HAVE ALREADY attended orientation but who have additional questions/need additional assistance. These groups of students may use the computer lab in KY 236, which is adjacent to the Advising Center. The lab, which will be managed by Renae Wooten, director of Enrollment Management Services, will be open from 9am - 5pm each day during this period. We will need volunteers to float around the lab and assist students as best as they can. Knowing, however, that there are complex issues and needs that may not be able to be satisfied in this venue, those who need more skilled/curricular assistance that cannot wait should be forwarded to the Counseling Center on the first floor of Frese Hall. Additionally, after new students have been through orientation and have met with an advisor, they may use this area to register/ask further questions/be assisted/ receive help on navigating CUNYfirst and Degree Works and the Pathways General Education curriculum. Any possible time you have to volunteer in the lab would be appreciated. Again, the computer lab will be open from 9am - 5pm from Thursday, August 28th - Wednesday, September 3rd.
