Hello all, If other colleges are saying "NO" why Queens have to feel pressured to go along with this proposal? Why can we do the same as others have done already? Its time that we also say no too. Colleges like Baruch and City College have said "no" while others like NYC Tech and John Jay are seemingly refusing to take any action. Meanwhile at Hunter College and we certainly here at Queens College have acquiesced to the Pathways process by not for a second time restating the position we took at our November 10, 2012 Senate meeting: Therefore the Academic Senate of Queens College concludes that the Pathways to Degree Completion Initiative cannot be redeemed by minor changes to its individual components and rejects Pathways on pedagogical, intellectual, and legal grounds. Perhaps a second refusal to the CUNY Board's resolution is what we should have stated in no uncertain terms. At no time has the Senate made any statement approving the Pathways to Degree Completion initiative. Quite to the contrary, the Senate passed a resolution last November rejecting Pathways on "pedagogical, intellectual, and legal grounds" and was one of the first governance bodies to do so. What the Senate approved in April was a required implementation plan describing how the college would go about putting courses into the Pathways pigeon holes. It was an act of compliance with the Board's resolution, not an approval of the process. Professor Bowen's statements made during debate at the April Senate meeting made an erroneous premise and conclusion that the Senate's approval of the implementation plan (a product of hours of work by a Senate committee comprised of faculty, staff and students) implied that the Senate approved of Pathways as a whole, which, as I have said, is very far from the truth. That misinformation has now been turned into print and distributed to the College community. Now that the damage is done I think it is the responsibility of the editors of The Catalyst to print and distribute an immediate retraction and explanation.
