Dear Bobby,
The proposed new scheduling matrix is attached, which we hope will be considered at the Februrary 7 Senate plenary. The Matrix Committee, appointed as a subcommittee of the Senate Campus Affairs, Environment, and Graduation Advisory Committee, met several times and solicited comments on earlier versions of the proposed matrix from department chairs, administrators, staff, students, and others. We have incorporated the majority of their suggestions into the current version.
The major change in the current matrix is that the break between classes is now fifteen minutes, rather than ten minutes. The acquisition of our new space in Queens Hall (the former CUNY Law School) was the reason for this change. The new times are quite similar to those in current use, except for the longer break time. The proposed schedule is virtually identical to the one used at the College during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s.
An earlier version of the proposed new matrix included a third free hour on Thursday afternoon. Many departments opposed this proposal, which would prevent them from using scarce laboratory space and would affect afternoon seminars and studio classes. Accordingly, the third free hour is now "Optional/Recommended" which means departments may schedule classes during this time.
The Matrix Committee
