Happy New Year!? We hope everyone had some time for rest and rejuvenation over the winter break. This message if for students who plan to graduate in May 2020 (this semester). As explained in the Student Handbook, the Comprehensive Exam is a requirement for all students who graduate from the program: "In the beginning of the Spring semester before graduation, counseling students are required to take the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam (CPCE). This multiple-choice test was designed around the national standards of the counseling profession and is used by counselor training programs around the country. It covers 8 major areas: (1) human development, (2) social & cultural foundations, (3) helping relationships (4) group work (5) career & lifestyle development (6) assessment & evaluation (7) research & program evaluation, and (8) professional orientation. The results of the exam give feedback to the faculty on each student's relative strengths and weaknesses in comparison to national norms. This exam does ?not? lead to certification as a professional counselor but is required to complete the program." Here are the instructions for registering for the Comps. 1. The exam is on Monday, March 09, 2020 in room IB 200 (QC Computer Lab) from 4:30pm-9pm. 2. You must submit a check in the amount of $85 to Dolly Mathura or Jaclyn Arroyo in PH033 by Friday, February 7, 2020 to cover the cost of the exam. Check is payable to COUNSELOR EDUCATION FUND 3. Once we submit the payment, we will be given directions with individual voucher numbers for each student to use when setting up an account that you will have to do prior to the exam. 4. Good afternoon everyone, My name is Buki and I just graduated from the program in May (with some of you). I am in the process of applying for my Limited Permit to practice. As most of you might know, there is a delay in processing paperwork for our permits at the State Office of Professions. I wanted to reach out and let you know that I will be sending out letters, emails and faxes to the state, specifically to Susan Naccarato, Director of the the Division of Professional Licensing Services and to Douglas Lentivech, the Deputy Commissioner of the State Office of Professions. R. and I just graduated with my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Queens College, CUNY in May. I am in the process of applying for my Limited Permit to practice Mental Health Counseling in the state of New York). Indicate when you submitted your paperwork and if/when you received any correspondence from the state (I completed Form 1 – Application for Licensure and fee on May 24, 2019. Form 5 – Application for Limited permit and fee was submitted on May 16, 2019. Form 2 – Certificate of Professional Education was mailed out June 20, 2019 and my official transcript was mailed out on June 10. 2019. On June 18th, I received an email response from the MHPBD office stating the following: “There is a 6-8 week process for scanning, logging, and reviewing mail that is received by the Department.”) Politely and concisely list your concerns and what actions you’d like the state to take (I am aware that the office is working diligently to process all paperwork. However, I feel the need to voice my concerns regarding the delays. As I’m sure you are aware, Mental Health Counselors work with vulnerable populations. When we have to wait months to obtain permit/licensure, it does not benefit the clients. In my case, I was offered a position at the site where I interned, but I had to “terminate” with my clients once the semester ended and then either ask my clients (some children) to wait for me or refer them to another counselor. Several of my clients have voiced that this process of waiting months for my permit to practice is “unfair.” I have to agree with this statement. In addition, it is unfair to ask our employers to wait months for their employees to begin working. That is practically unheard of in any other job field, but seems even more unethical and unprofessional in our line of work. What I’d hope to see going forward is the “understaffing” and “paperwork processing delays” issues at the Mental Health Practitioners’ office (at the State Office of Professions) be taken seriously and addressed accordingly.
