GOTHAM PROFESSIONAL ARTS ACADEMY
Gotham Professional Arts Academy is currently interviewing candidates for the following anticipated vacancies in the 2016-17 school year:
• Social Studies
• Special Education
• English
• Math
Gotham Professional Arts Academy is a small, NYC public high school located in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn. Gotham Academy was founded in 2007 with a mission to provide a progressive education model and an integrated arts curriculum to non-screened students
in central and northern Brooklyn. As a member of the NY Performance Standards Consortium, Gotham Academy has had a regents waiver since 2008 and has spent eight years developing a rigorous performance assessment culture. Students graduate based on successful
completion of performance assessment tasks (PBATs) in five areas: English, Social Studies, Math, Science and Art. Courses and curricula are designed by staff to prepare students to successfully complete the PBATs in each subject, with a school-wide focus
on essay writing, using original sources, interpreting literary, historical, scientific and visual texts, developing arguments based on compelling evidence, and oral presentations as a demonstration of mastery.
Gotham Academy is a Community Learning Partner School, through a grant from the UFT, and a PROSE school. Our staff participates in departmental and school-wide decision-making and distributed leadership. We rely on a vigorous advisory system to promote student
voice in our community and support students’ social and emotional growth. We are seeking teachers who want to be part of a collaborative and self-reflective community of educators who care deeply about the urgent work of teaching in a high-needs urban school
district. We are also a school with a long history of using the entire city as our classroom through frequent fieldwork trips designed to broaden student opportunities through engaging hands-on activities.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies classes focus on critical inquiry into crucial periods of history. Teachers develop original curricula that invite students to conduct rigorous investigation into one historical period, emphasizing depth over breadth, and ensuring that all
students develop the skills to navigate conflicting historical evidence to arrive at their own interpretation of historical events. We are looking for someone with strong content knowledge of American History, particularly African American History.
Special Education
Our Special Education team is comprised of licensed special education teachers who have one content area they are most familiar with. Special Education teachers co-teach ICT classes, working closely with content area teachers to develop strategies to meet
the needs of a wide range of students. Special education teachers also write IEPs, work with their team to develop full-staff professional development activities, and collaborate with our social workers to ensure that our students’ social-emotional needs
are met. We run a fully inclusive program, which applies to our special education teachers as well: we are looking for special education teachers who are eager to dig into curriculum design, participate in advisory culture, and develop strategies to educate
the whole child.
English
English classes at Gotham Academy focus on literary analysis and criticism with an emphasis on developing excellent essay writing skills to hold students in good stead when they get to college. Our English teachers develop original curricula, working closely
with their department colleagues to ensure that all our courses support the development of the analytical and writing skills required to complete the English PBAT. Grammar and mechanics lessons are integrated into the curriculum of all our English classes.
Math
As a PBAT school, we seek ways to engage students in mathematical thinking that may not have been offered to them in schools where the math curriculum is aligned with standardized tests. The Math department works collaboratively to develop engaging original
math experiences for our students and participates in our school culture of taking frequent fieldwork trips.
All applicants must possess New York State and New York City certification in the appropriate subject area. Please send resume and cover letter to Principal Alex White at 212alex@gmail.com.
