Dear Graduate Students, Preregistration for Spring 2017 English MA courses, by email or in person, will take place *Monday, October 31, through Wednesday, November 2*. Matriculated graduate students in good academic standing (i.e., minimum 3.0 GPA and no outstanding INCs) are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to sign up early for classes. Also attached are the course descriptions for our wonderful slate of Spring 2017 courses. Below are preregistration instructions and FAQs, including a breakdown of program requirements for MA, MS ED, and MAT students. If you have a complicated academic record and need advising prior to registering for classes, please make an appointment with Caroline before the preregistration period. *Preregistration via Email* Please email Bill (worchard@qc.cuny.edu) or Caroline ( caroline.hong@qc.cuny.edu) with the following information: 1. Your full name 2. Your 8-digit CUNYfirst ID# 3. The courses you’d like to register for, with their 4- or 5-digit class codes (e.g., ENGL 636, code: 1145) Graduate students can preregister for up to 3 spring classes. Email preregistration requests will be processed within 24 hours and in the order they are received. We will send you a confirmation notice once you’ve been registered, asking you to log onto CUNYfirst and check your schedule. *Preregistration in Person* If you wish to preregister in person, please see Caroline in the Graduate Studies office in Klapper 604 during one of these times: * Tuesday, November 1, from 12:30–3:30pm * Wednesday, November 2, from 2:00–4:00pm If you’re preregistering in person, please be sure to fill out the above information on one of the preregistration slips, which you can find at the main English Department office (Klapper 607), *before* you come see us. *Preregistration FAQs* *Who is eligible to preregister for Spring 2017 classes?* All MA, MS ED, and MAT students with an active CUNYfirst account who are in good academic standing are eligible to preregister for courses. If your GPA has fallen below 3.0 or if you’re carrying incompletes on your record from a previous semester, you will need to schedule an advising appointment with the Director of Graduate Studies, Caroline Hong, before being permitted to preregister. If the Bursar has placed a hold on your account for any reason, however negligible or unwarranted the hold might be, the CUNYfirst system will not allow you to be preregistered for classes. Please check your account before the start of the preregistration period and make sure that all holds have been removed. Non-matriculated/non-degree students are not eligible to preregister. *How many classes can I preregister for?* All MA, MS ED, and MAT students may preregister for up to 3 spring classes. *Can I take a course with the same number twice for credit?* Courses entitled “Studies in…” may be repeated for credit as long as the specific course topics are substantially different (see course titles at http://english.qc.cuny.edu/graduate-programs/). For example, ENGL 714, 719, 720, 721, 722, 723, 724, 726, 727, 729, 736, and 742 may all be repeated for credit. ENGL 681 (Special Studies) and 781 (Special Seminars) may also be repeated for credit, as long as the specific course topics are different. ENGL 636, 638, 701, 702, and 703 *cannot* be repeated for credit. *What are my program requirements?* For MA students: * ENGL 701 * ENGL 636 * 7 open electives (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, *excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–762, which are reserved for MFA students*) * ENGL 791 (thesis essay) For MS ED students admitted *Fall 2012 or after*: * ENGL 702 or 703 * 2 pre-1900 electives * 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, *excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–762, which are reserved for MFA students*) * ENGL 781 For MS ED students admitted *before Fall 2012*: * ENGL 702 * ENGL 703 or 636 * ENGL 662 or 719 * 2 open electives (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, *excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–762, which are reserved for MFA students*) For MAT students: * 1 pre-1900 elective * 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, *excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–762, which are reserved for MFA students*) * ENGL 781 For Spring 2017, the following courses fulfill the pre-1900 requirement: ENGL 719 (code 1147), ENGL 723 (code 1148), and ENGL 726 (49762). *Can I preregister for ENGL 791, the thesis course, or ENGL 795, the independent study course?* English 791 and English 795 require additional advising and paperwork, so these are not courses for which you can preregister. Please email or make an appointment with the Director of Graduate Studies, Caroline Hong, if you’re planning to take one of these courses in the fall semester.
