Dear All, We are very happy to announce that we have openings for continuing MA students to teach in the English Department in academic year 2018-19. Those who are currently matriculated in the program and who plan to be enrolled for both semesters of the next calendar year are eligible to apply. The courses are all writing courses, typically English 110. We don't yet know how many sections we will be able to offer MA students but in the past we have been able to offer about 4 classes total. A committee from the MA program and English Department will choose the MA students who will teach. Decisions will based on the quality of your materials, your performance in the program so far, and predicted success in the classroom. A few important parameters: 1. If you are chosen to teach, you must take English 793: The Teaching Practicum in the fall of 2018. English 793 usually meets during the day, often in the morning, one day a week. Taking this class is a non-negotiable requirement for teaching in the English Department. 2. The deadline for your applications to be emailed to me is December 11. However, if you know you are planning to apply, please let me know now, so I can plan ahead. When you submit your application, please email the materials below to me as a SINGLE MS Word or pdf file. For your subject heading in the email please write "Application for 2018 Teaching" and I will confirm receipt of the message. (If you don't get a confirmation from me, please resend.) 3. The application has four parts: a. A letter describing why you want to teach writing courses. I would advise making your letter at least one typed page. In the letter, briefly describe how you would teach the course, why you want to teach the course, what your pedagogical approach would be, and how this fits with your academic and career goals. b. A resume or CV listing all relevant experience/background. c. Two sample lessons/assignments for English 110. Syllabi for all the courses are available in the English Department and on line on the English Department website. For information about English 110, go to http://english110.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu/. d. In order to schedule your prospective courses, we need scheduling information. Please fill out the preference form here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe-L0pQvKUB0Q-cYDcFwlEDC8XoJot4RK6-... Keep in mind that the more flexible you can be about times and days on this form, the better. Finally, being awarded a teaching position only guarantees that you will be assigned courses for the term of the MA instructor position-one academic year. When the year ends, you are welcome and encouraged to submit your application for inclusion in the adjunct pool if you are interested in continuing to teach at QC. Instructors who have shown excellent performances in teaching English 110 are typically highly considered since their future course loads will undoubtedly include or comprise English 110 courses. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Best, Bill _________________________________________________ William Orchard Assistant Professor Assistant Director, MA Program Department of English Queens College/ CUNY worchard@qc.cuny.edu http://english.qc.cuny.edu/quick-links/william-orchard/
