Dear Graduate Students, I'm writing to let you know that tomorrow (Wed 12/10) will be the final day of scheduled graduate office hours: 3:30-6:30pm in Klapper 604. I'll also be available to meet with you on Friday 12/10 and the following Wednesday 12/17, but only by appointment. Email to arrange a meeting time. Other end-of-semester annoucements: 1. Course Evaluations Please spare the time to fill out evaluations of all your courses. The department welcomes your feedback and takes your suggestions very seriously. All comments are anonymous, confidential, and unavailable to instructors until after final grades have been submitted. The link to the evaluation webpage is: http://www.qc.cuny.edu/evaluate/ 2. Taking an Incomplete If you're unable to complete your final course assignment and want to take an incomplete, please remember that you must confirm this arrangement with the course instructor. Keep in mind that an incomplete is a temporary grade and should be resolved as soon as possible. The Office of Graduate Students stipulates that all incompletes must be resolved within one calendar year. 3. Spring 2015 courses Descriptions of spring 2015 courses are attached to this message. All students should now be able to register themselves for elective courses via CUNYFirst. Only the two required courses (636 & 701), the thesis essay course (791), and the independent study course (795) require program permission to register. Please don't hesitate to email me if you have questions. 4. 791 and 795 paperwork If you're planning to write your thesis essay or organize an independent study for the Spring 2015 semester, please make sure to submit your paperwork as soon as possible. If you have questions about the sign-up forms for these course, let me know. Dear Students, One final, friendly reminder about the 791 thesis essay meeting taking place this Wednesday November 19, 6:00-7:15pm, in Klapper 710. This meeting is for all students who are planning to register for English 791 and write their thesis essay in the Spring 2015 semester. Latecomers and early departers-those of you with 4:30pm or 6:30pm, or with work schedules that make it hard to get to campus right at 6:00-are most welcome. No apologies necessary! It's better to come for just part of the meeting than not attend at all. I'll bring snacks to keep everyone's strength up. Agenda for the meeting: 1. Planning and Logistics I'll distribute copies of the spring 2015 edition of the 791 course guide and talk you through the timeline for finding a thesis advisor and reader/submitting a thesis sign-up form/registering for 791/scheduling a preliminary advising meeting before the end of the current semester. 2. Thesis Essay proposal The 791 sign-up form asks you to submit a short (approx. 300-word) topic proposal, outlining the scope and concerns of your thesis essay. I'll hand out copies of two or three recent proposals and we'll talk about the elements of the genre of the research proposal and how to write one successfully. I'm attaching an electronic copy of the sign-up form to this message, but I'll also bring hard copies of the form to our meeting. 3. Q&A We'll make sure to leave plenty of time for discussion and questions. I can also stick around for a few minutes after the meeting has ended if you have concerns you'd rather discuss in private. Dear Graduate Students, Just a reminder that pre-registration begins next Monday, Nov 3 through Wednesday, Nov 5. Pre-register via email by sending me a message at andrea.walkden(a)qc.cuny.edu<mailto:andrea.walkden@qc.cuny.edu> (not at the mailing list address) with your full name, student ID#, and course numbers and codes. Descriptions of all spring 2015 courses and the pre-registration info sheet are attached to this message. I also want to clarify something that may be causing confusion. ENG 791 (the thesis essay writing course) and ENG 795 (the independent study course) are not courses that are included in pre-registration. Both of these courses require additional "sign-up" paperwork. Neither has a finite number of seats and so there's no danger of you being closed out of these courses. If you're planning to organize an independent study (ENG 795) next semester, please make a separate advising appointment with me. If you're planning to write your thesis essay (ENG 791) next semester, there will be an information meeting on Wednesday Nov 19, 6:00-7:15pm. I'll send out more details of this meeting shortly, but for you now I'd ask you just to mark your calendars. Dear Graduate Students, Pre-registration for spring 2015 graduate English courses will begin on Monday November 3, and continue on Tuesday November 4 and Wednesday November 5. The department encourages you to take advantage of this opportunity to sign up early for classes so that you can meet your program's requirements. I'm attaching descriptions of all spring 2015 graduate English courses to this message. They're also posted on the bulletin board outside Klapper 604. Pasted below-and attached as a separate document-are answers to some common questions about pre-registration that I encourage you to read, including a breakdown of individual program requirements. If you have questions that are not answered there, please don't hesitate to be in touch with me during the next week. If you have complicated questions about your academic record, you should plan to schedule an advising meeting before the start of pre-registration. My scheduled advising hours next week are on Wednesday (Oct 29), 3:00-6:30. I'm also available on Monday (Oct 27), 2:00-4:00 and 5:30-6:00; and Friday (Oct 31), 12:30-1:30, by appointment. All MA and MS.Ed. students with an active CUNYfirst account who are in good academic standing are eligible to pre-register for courses. If your GPA has fallen below 3.0 or if you're carrying incompletes on your record from a previous semester, you will need to schedule an advising appointment with the Director of Graduate Studies or before being permitted to pre-register. If the Bursar has placed a hold on your account for any reason, however negligible or unwarranted the hold might be, the CUNYfirst system will not allow you to be pre-registered for classes. Please check your account before the start of the pre-registration period and make sure that all holds have been removed. Non-matriculated or non-degree students are not eligible to pre-register. How many classes can I pre-register for? All MA and MS.Ed. students may pre-register for up to 3 classes What information do I need to bring with me to the pre-registration meeting or send in my email request to pre-register? * Your full name and 8-digit CUNY ID number * The course numbers and 5-digit course codes of all the courses for which you wish to register. e.g. ENG 636 (code: 56809) If you're pre-registering in person, be sure to fill out this information on one of the pre-registration slips stacked on the hallway outside the English department office. The slips speed up the process for everyone! Can I take a course with the same number twice for credit? Courses entitled "Studies in" may be repeated for credit if the course subject is substantially different. For example, ENG 742 (Studies in Shakespeare's Plays); ENG 724 (Studies in Victorian Literature), ENG 727 (Studies in American Literature); and ENGL 736 (Studies in Theory) may all be repeated for credit. Special Seminars (ENG 781) may be repeated for credit if the subject is different. ENG 636, 638, 701, and 703 cannot be repeated for credit. What are my program requirements? For all MA students: * ENG 636 - History of Literary Criticism * ENG 701 - Theory and Practice of Graduate Methodology * 7 open electives (any literature class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes which are reserved for MFA students) * ENG 791 - Thesis Writing Course For MS.Ed students admitted before fall 2012: * A theory course * A methodology course * A history of the English language course * Two open electives (any literature class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding ENG 701 and the creative writing workshops and craft classes which are reserved for MFA students) For all current ADVCT and for MS.Ed students admitted fall 2012 and following: * A methodology course * Two pre-1900 electives * An open elective (any literature class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding ENG 701 and the creative writing workshops and craft classes which are reserved for MFA students) * ENG 781 For the Spring 2015 semester, the following courses fulfill the methodology requirement: ENG 636, ENG 736 For the Spring 2015 semester, the following courses fulfill the methodology requirement: ENG 703 For the Spring 2015 semester, the following courses fulfill the pre-1900 elective requirement: ENG 742, ENG 724, and ENG 727 Can I pre-register for 791, the thesis writing course, or for 795, the independent study course? Dear Graduate Students, Many of you were involved in making last year's inaugural QC English Graduate Conference a huge success! And it's time to begin planning our second annual conference, which will take place this spring on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. This is a call for volunteers to join the Graduate Conference Committee and help organize the conference. The committee's responsibilities will include coming up with a conference theme, crafting a call for papers, making decisions on submissions, organizing panels, asking faculty to chair the panels, and promoting the conference. We plan to hold our first planning meeting at the end of October and will meet about once a month leading up to the conference. Even if you don't volunteer, we hope that you'll submit proposals once the call for papers goes out. Conference organizers and presenters will be participating in an important aspect of professional academic life (and it looks great on CVs and applications for those of you planning to continue your graduate studies).
