[EnglishMA] Spring 2023 End-of-Semester Announcements

Dear Graduate Students, Tuesday, May 16, is the last day of classes for the Spring 2023 semester. You're almost at the finish line! Please read on for some important end-of-the-semester announcements and updates. As always, if you have any questions or need advising, please email Hillary Miller or me anytime. COURSE WITHDRAWALS If you fell behind in any of your classes and aren't able to pass them, your best option is to drop those courses with a W grade via your CUNYfirst Student Center. The withdrawal deadline for Spring 2023 is TUESDAY, MAY 16. FYI, W grades do not impact your GPA. (However, if you have any questions about how Ws might impact financial aid, you can email the QC Hub<https://www.qc.cuny.edu/qchub/> at QCHub(a)qc.cuny.edu<mailto:QCHub@qc.cuny.edu>.) REGISTERING FOR FALL (& SUMMER) 2023 COURSES If you're planning to take Fall 2023 and/or Summer 2023 courses and haven't yet registered, please do so ASAP via CUNYfirst. (Courses that are under-enrolled may be canceled by the College administration.). Currently, four fall classes are closed: Professor Chu’s 733 on Asian American Literature, Professor Fisk’s 735 on Global Literature, Professor Hahn’s 781 on Creative Writing for English Educators, and Professor Moore’s 781 on Speculative Memoir. If you are interested in these enrolling classes, please contact us and we’ll place you on a wait list for the course. NEW WEBSITE This year, the MA program’s website was updated and redesigned. REGISTERING FOR ENGL 791 A reminder that, for anyone planning to take ENGL 791 (thesis essay) Fall 2023, the sign-up forms and proposals are due by email to MAEnglish(a)qc.cuny.edu<mailto:MAEnglish@qc.cuny.edu> by August 4, 2023, at the latest. Please email us for more info or to get a copy of the sign-up form. (Students planning to take ENGL 791 in the fall should've already been in touch—please email ASAP if you haven't already. Because some faculty may have limited availability in the summer, it’s good to confirm your thesis plans before classes finish this semester.) GRADUATION Finally, heartfelt congratulations to all of you who are finishing up the program and earning your MA degree this semester! You should be incredibly proud of yourselves for all you've accomplished! The campus-wide Commencement Ceremony<https://www.qc.cuny.edu/ce/> and our English Department Graduation Ceremony are taking place on campus on Thursday, June 1. [EnglishMA] Congrats to Kayla Baur, winner of the 2023 Comley Prize!

Our heartfelt congratulations to Kayla Baur, the winner of this year's Nancy Comley Prize, for her outstanding essay “Mixed Feelings: The Emotional Appeals of Zitkala-Ša’s American Indian Stories”! Thank you to everyone who submitted their work—the judges loved reading all the essays and had a very difficult time choosing a winner. We faculty are always blown away by the excellent work of our graduate students, and you all should be incredibly proud of yourselves! We will be celebrating Kayla and all our QC English students’ accomplishments at this year's Writing Prizes Ceremony, which will take place in person on Wednesday, May 10, from 12:00–2:00pm, in the Godwin-Ternbach Museum in Klapper Hall.
