[EnglishMA] Signing up for ENGL 791 in Fall 2022

Dear Graduate Students, Hope you're all continuing to take care, especially as we enter the home stretch of this semester. If you think you'll be completing your MA in Fall 2022 and are planning to take ENGL 791 and write your thesis essay next semester, please read on. Please start by watching this 13-minute video on "*Preparing for ENGL 791 <https://youtu.be/36_Kdwa5zrc>*." The video was recorded last year, so the dates are incorrect, but all the other info is still relevant—what the thesis essay is, how to find an advisor, how to sign up for ENGL 791, write an effective proposal, etc. I've attached here a handout of the updated slides for Fall 2022, which includes the correct deadline for submitting your ENGL 791 sign-up form and proposal, *August 5, 2022*. I've also attached copies of the sign-up form and the sample proposals. After watching the video, if you're planning to take ENGL 791 and write your thesis essay in Fall 2022, please *reply to this email to let me know and include your 8-digit CUNY ID #*. I'll follow up to confirm that you'll be ready to take ENGL 791 in the fall and then send you the Guide to ENGL 791 and add you to the 791 email list. [EnglishMA] Nancy Comley Prize + prereg save-the-date

Dear Graduate Students, Please find attached (and pasted below) the submission guidelines for our annual *Nancy Comley Prize*, awarded to the best essay written by an English MA, MS Ed, or MAT student. The prize winner gets a little bit of $$$ and of course more importantly the honor of having their brilliance recognized by our English department community! We hope you'll consider submitting something, whether it's an essay you've already written for a class, a work-in-progress, or your thesis essay. Submissions are due *Monday, April 25*, right after spring break. Also please save the date—*preregistration* for English grad courses will be happening via email the week of *April 4*. We'll be sending out instructions and the Fall 2022 course descriptions next week, so please look out for that. The prize is sponsored by the English Department Alumni Fund. All currently matriculated English MA, MS Ed, and MAT students, as well as master’s students who graduated in Fall 2021, are eligible. Submissions should be 10–25 pages in length, typed, double-spaced, in standard 12-point font, with 1-inch margins and page numbers. They must be carefully proofread and formatted according to current MLA style <https://style.mla.org/mla-format/>, including a Works Cited page. The deadline for submissions is *Monday, April 25, 2022*. All entries must be submitted via email to MAEnglish(a)qc.cuny.edu. Before submitting your entry, please take careful note of the following instructions: - Essays must be submitted in DOC, DOCX, or PDF formats. - The filename for your essay should read “[CUNYfirst ID number]NancyComleyPrize.” If you don’t know your 8-digit CUNYfirst ID number, please look it up before submitting your essay. - In the body of your email, make sure to include the following information: 1. Dear Graduate Students, Preregistration for Fall 2022 English MA courses will take place via email ( MAEnglish(a)qc.cuny.edu) next week, *Monday, April 4, through Thursday, April 7*. Please carefully read the attached (and pasted below) preregistration instructions and FAQs, which includes breakdowns of program requirements. Also attached are our Fall 2022 course offerings and descriptions. FYI, if you are planning to take ENGL 791 and/or 795 in Fall 2022, we will be sending out more info on how to sign up for those after preregistration has ended. Best, Caroline & Hillary, your Directors of Graduate Studies in English -- Preregistration for English MA Courses FALL 2022 Preregistration for Fall 2022 English MA courses will take place Monday, April 4, through Thursday, April 7, 2022. Matriculated MA, MAT, and MS Ed students in good academic standing (i.e., minimum average 3.0 GPA and no outstanding INCs) are eligible for and strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to sign up early for classes. Accelerated students who will still be undergraduates in Fall 2022 and are in good academic standing are also eligible to preregister for English MA courses. Please carefully read the following preregistration instructions and FAQs, including a breakdown of program requirements for MA, MAT, MS Ed, and Accelerated students. Fall 2022 course descriptions are attached separately. Note: the majority of our graduate English courses in Fall 2022 will be meeting in person, with a few fully online courses (ENGL 636, 733, and 781-01). Your full name 2. Your program (MA, MAT, MS Ed, or Accelerated) 3. Your 8-digit CUNY ID# 4. The courses you’d like to register for, with their 4- or 5-digit class codes (e.g., ENGL 636, code 25703) Students may preregister for up to 3 fall courses. Preregistration requests will be processed within 24 hours and in the order they are received. You will receive a confirmation email once you’ve been registered, asking you to log onto CUNYfirst and double-check your schedule. Preregistration FAQs Who is eligible to preregister for English MA classes? All matriculated MA, MAT, and MS Ed students, as well as Accelerated English BA/MA students who will still be undergraduates in Fall 2022, are eligible to preregister for courses as long as they have an active CUNYfirst account and are in good academic standing. If your GPA has fallen below 3.0 or if you’re carrying incompletes on your record from a previous semester, you should seek advising with one of the Directors of Graduate Studies, Dr. Caroline K. Hong or Dr. Hillary Miller, before trying to preregister. Accelerated students who are planning to graduate with their BAs either this Spring 2022 semester or in Summer 2022 will not yet be able to register for fall graduate courses. Only once their BA graduation has been approved and their status in the English MA program has officially been activated on CUNYfirst can they then register for their Fall 2022 MA courses. Please contact the Directors of Graduate Studies with any questions or for advising. If you have any holds on your CUNYfirst account for any reason, however unwarranted, CUNYfirst will not allow you to be registered for classes. Please check your account before the start of the preregistration period and make sure that any holds have been resolved. Non-matriculated/non-degree students are not eligible to preregister and must wait to register themselves during their registration appointment period on CUNYfirst. Can I take a course with the same number twice for credit? Courses currently titled “Studies in…” may be repeated for credit as long as the specific course topics and texts are substantially different. For example, ENGL 639, 726, 727, and 742 may be repeated for credit. ENGL 781 (Special Seminars) may also be repeated for credit, as long as the specific course topics and texts are substantially different. ENGL 636, 638, 701, 702, and 703 cannot be repeated for credit. What are my English course requirements? For MA students (30 credits): - ENGL 701 - ENGL 636 - 7 open electives (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) - ENGL 791 (thesis essay) For Accelerated BA/MA students (up to 9 credits; or up to 6 credits if in the English Honors Seminar): - ENGL 701 - ENGL 636 - 1 elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) For MAT students (9 credits): - 1 pre-1900 elective - 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) - ENGL 781 For MS Ed students (15 credits): - ENGL 702 (currently only offered in spring semesters) or ENGL 703 - 2 pre-1900 electives - 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) - ENGL 781 For MAT and MS Ed students, what courses fulfill the pre-1900 requirement? To fulfill the pre-1900 requirement, MAT and MS Ed students can take ENGL 726, 727, or 742 in Fall 2022. Can I preregister for ENGL 791, the thesis course, or ENGL 795, the independent study course? English 791 and English 795 require additional advising and paperwork, so these are not courses for which you can preregister.
