Hello all, I’m writing with a quick reminder that, if you are going to be writing your thesis in Spring 2023, the deadline for submitting the thesis sign-up sheet is January 5, 2023. Thanks to those of you who have already submitted your forms, and to those who attended information sessions or reached out for information about the process. If you haven’t been in touch and are planning to write in the Spring 2023, please get contact us immediately so that we can give you the materials you need. Dear Graduate Students, Tuesday, December 13, is the last day of classes for the Fall 2023 semester. Please read on for some important end-of-the-semester announcements and updates. As always, if you have any questions or need advising, please email both of us anytime. COURSE WITHDRAWALS (BY TOMORROW) The withdrawal deadline for Fall 2022 is TUESDAY, December 13. These will result in a W grade on your transcript for a course. FYI, W grades do not impact your GPA. (However, if you have any questions about how Ws might impact financial aid, you can contact the QC Hub<https://www.qc.cuny.edu/admissions/fa/Pages/default.aspx> via Live Chat or by email at QCHub(a)qc.cuny.edu<mailto:QCHub@qc.cuny.edu>.) TAKING AN INC If you are unable to complete a final course assignment and would like to take an incomplete (INC), please discuss this possibility and make specific arrangements with your professor. Keep in mind that an INC is a temporary grade and should be resolved ASAP. All INCs must be completed within 1 calendar year (so an INC in Fall 2022 must be resolved before the end of Fall 2023). Please note that QC is now enforcing the policy for grad students that any INCs not resolved within 1 year will be converted to failing grades (FIN). REGISTERING FOR SPRING (& SUMMER) 2023 COURSES If you're planning to take Spring 2023 and/or Summer 2023 courses and haven't yet registered, please do so ASAP via CUNYfirst. (Courses that are under-enrolled may be canceled by the College administration.) I've attached the spring and summer course descriptions again here. REGISTERING FOR ENGL 791 & ENGL 795 A reminder that, for anyone planning to take ENGL 791 (thesis essay) or ENGL 795 (independent study) in Spring 2023, the sign-up forms and proposals are due by email to MAEnglish(a)qc.cuny.edu<mailto:MAEnglish@qc.cuny.edu> by January 5, 2023, at the latest. Please email us for more info or to get a copy of either sign-up form. (Students planning to take ENGL 791 in the spring should've already been in touch—please email ASAP if you haven't already.) GRADUATION Finally, heartfelt congratulations to all of you who are finishing up your MA requirements and graduating this semester! You should be incredibly proud of yourselves for all you've accomplished. We invite you back in Spring 2023 to participate in our annual MA conference and submit for the annual Nancy Comley Prize, as well as to take part in our annual English Department graduation ceremony in early June. Please stay on the MA listserv through the spring in order to get announcements about these upcoming activities. [EnglishMA] Tutoring Opportunities at QC for MA Students in Spring 2023

There are a number of writing tutor opportunities for adjunct faculty, MA/MFA students, and undergraduates available in Spring 2023 through two projects funded by the Provost’s Office to help improve retention and passing rates in English 110 and through a recent grant designed to support Asian American and Pacific Islander students. The different types of tutoring are: 1. Embedded tutors for English 110 2. Embedded tutors for English 115 3. Tutors specializing in tutoring multilingual writers Embedded tutors would be assigned two sections and they would attend the conference hours for 110 or the class meetings for English 115. They would be responsible to assist the faculty member in giving individualized writing support to students during the class meeting period. Multilingual tutors would work their hours in the Writing Center and tutor students from a variety of classes with a focus on multilingual students. Candidates for these positions could be one of any of the following categories: * Current adjunct writing faculty who would like to supplement their hours * MA/MFA students who are interested in teaching writing * MA/MFA students who have previous writing center experience * Current or prospective adjunct faculty who are interested in teaching English 108, English 109, English 115, or the Navitas sections of English 110. * Undergraduates who were strong and reflective writers in English 110/English 130 or any W class * Undergraduates who are exploring a career in teaching * Undergraduates who are in the writing minor * Undergraduates/graduate students/current part-time faculty interested in tutoring who are bilingual * Undergraduates/graduate students/current part-time faculty interested in tutoring who have experience with Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Bengali, Nepali, or Hindi The compensation for these tutoring positions is $15.50-18.50/hr with an average of 10 hours a week. These hours will include tutoring and training.
