Hello all, We’ve received a number of different questions about the accelerated program during pre-registration, and wanted to hold a brief advising session for those interested on Thursday at 12:15 pm, during the free hour. We’ll answer whatever questions you have, but will also talk briefly about: * How many classes can you take as an accelerated student? * What is the difference between MA and BA classes? * When can you enroll in MA classes after graduating? * What is the best way to complete the MA requirements? * And more! Dear Graduate Students, Preregistration for Spring 2023 English MA courses will take place via email (MAEnglish(a)qc.cuny.edu<mailto:MAEnglish@qc.cuny.edu>) next week, Monday, October 24, through Wednesday, October 26. Please carefully read the attached (and pasted below) preregistration instructions and FAQs, which includes breakdowns of program requirements. Also attached are our Spring 2023 course offerings and descriptions. Summer 2023 course descriptions will available early next week. FYI, if you are planning to take ENGL 791 and/or 795 in Fall 2022, we will be sending out more info on how to sign up for those after preregistration has ended. Best, Bill and Hillary, your Directors of Graduate Studies in English -- Preregistration for English MA Courses Spring 2023 Preregistration for Spring 2023 English MA courses will take place Monday, October 24, through Wednesday, October 26, 2022. Matriculated MA, MAT, and MS Ed students in good academic standing (i.e., minimum average 3.0 GPA and no outstanding INCs) are eligible for and strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to sign up early for classes. Accelerated students who will still be undergraduates in Fall 2022 and are in good academic standing are also eligible to preregister for English MA courses. Please carefully read the following preregistration instructions and FAQs, including a breakdown of program requirements for MA, MAT, MS Ed, and Accelerated students. Fall 2022 course descriptions are attached separately. Note: the majority of our graduate English courses in Fall 2022 will be meeting in person, with a few fully online courses (ENGL 636, 733, and 781-01). Instructions for Preregistration via Email During the Spring 2023 preregistration period of October 24 to 26 only, please email MAEnglish(a)qc.cuny.edu<mailto:MAEnglish@qc.cuny.edu> with the following info: 1. Your full name 2. Your program (MA, MAT, MS Ed, or Accelerated) 3. Your 8-digit CUNY ID# 4. The courses you’d like to register for, with their 4- or 5-digit class codes (e.g., ENGL 636, code 25703) Students may preregister for up to 3 spring courses. Preregistration requests will be processed within 24 hours and in the order they are received. You will receive a confirmation email once you’ve been registered, asking you to log onto CUNYfirst and double-check your schedule. Preregistration FAQs Who is eligible to preregister for English MA classes? All matriculated MA, MAT, and MS Ed students, as well as Accelerated English BA/MA students who will still be undergraduates in Spring 2023, are eligible to preregister for courses as long as they have an active CUNYfirst account and are in good academic standing. If your GPA has fallen below 3.0 or if you’re carrying incompletes on your record from a previous semester, you should seek advising with one of the Directors of Graduate Studies, Bill Orchard or Hillary Miller, before trying to preregister. Accelerated students who are planning to graduate with their BAs either this Fall 2022 semester will not yet be able to register for spring graduate courses. Only once their BA graduation has been approved and their status in the English MA program has officially been activated on CUNYfirst can they then register for their Fall 2022 MA courses. Please contact the Directors of Graduate Studies with any questions or for advising. If you have any holds on your CUNYfirst account for any reason, however unwarranted, CUNYfirst will not allow you to be registered for classes. Please check your account before the start of the preregistration period and make sure that any holds have been resolved. Non-matriculated/non-degree students are not eligible to preregister and must wait to register themselves during their registration appointment period on CUNYfirst. Can I take a course with the same number twice for credit? Courses currently titled “Studies in…” may be repeated for credit as long as the specific course topics and texts are substantially different. For example, ENGL 719, 722, and 729 may be repeated for credit. ENGL 781 (Special Seminars) may also be repeated for credit, as long as the specific course topics and texts are substantially different. ENGL 636, 638, 701, 702, and 703 cannot be repeated for credit. What are my English course requirements? For MA students (30 credits): · ENGL 701 · ENGL 636 · 7 open electives (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) · ENGL 791 (thesis essay) For Accelerated BA/MA students (up to 9 credits; or up to 6 credits if in the English Honors Seminar): · ENGL 701 · ENGL 636 · 1 elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) For MAT students (9 credits): · 1 pre-1900 elective · 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) · ENGL 781 For MS Ed students (15 credits): · ENGL 702 (currently only offered in spring semesters) or ENGL 703 · 2 pre-1900 electives · 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) · ENGL 781 For MAT and MS Ed students, what courses fulfill the pre-1900 requirement? To fulfill the pre-1900 requirement, MAT and MS Ed students can take ENGL 719 and 722 in Spring 2023. Can I preregister for ENGL 791, the thesis course, or ENGL 795, the independent study course? English 791 and English 795 require additional advising and paperwork, so these are not courses for which you can preregister. The Directors of Graduate Studies will announce more information about how to sign up for these courses after the preregistration period has ended.

Dear MA students, September went by swiftly, and now we find ourselves at the start of October and in weather that feels decidedly autumnal. There a lot of things going on in October, so we have divided this month’s message into three sections: one relating to the program, one relating to events on campus, and the last devoted some funding and prize opportunities at CUNY and beyond. Pre-registration: Pre-registration occurs early this year during the week of October 24. Course descriptions and instructions on pre-registering will be sent out the week prior. In recent years, there has been a high demand for on-line and hybrid courses. Please note that we will need to enforce enrollment limits on these classes, and will maintain waitlists for courses that reach capacity. We therefore urge you to register for courses early. Teaching Opportunities at Queens College: Occasionally, a very limited number of one-course adjunct and graduate assistant teaching positions, primarily in freshman composition (ENGL 110 and 130), may be available. Although these opportunities are limited—usually just one or two courses per academic year—we would like to build a list of students who would be interested in teaching. The strongest applicants will be those who have completed or in the process of completing about a half of the courses required for the program, and who have performed well (3.7 GPA and higher) in these courses. OCTOBER EVENTS OCTOBER 13: READING: Queens College’s own John Weir will be reading with Queens College MFA alumna and poet Camila Santos at 7pm in the Godwin-Ternbach Museum in Klapper Hall. A reception and book signing will follow the event. OCTOBER 18: READING: Queens College’s Off the Page Series welcomes Daphne Palasi Andreades. A graduate of Baruch College/ CUNY, Andreades is the author of Brown Girls, a novel about a group of women who grew up together in an outer borough of New York City. The novel was a New York Times Editor’s Pick and longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize. For those considering applying to a PhD programs this year or later, this event will give you an overview of the process in addition to explaining the particular strengths and features of the Graduate Center’s program. OCTOBER OPPORTUNITIES We want to make students aware of some of the funding opportunities and writing prizes available to MA students. Women Writing Women’s Lives Kathy Chamberlin Award: This award provides a grant of $500 to women who are writing about women’s lives. The grant funds support research to be completed in 2023, and would be well-suited to a student who is planning to write a thesis on a woman writer. The details about the grant are available here<https://womenwritingwomenslives.org/kathy-chamberlain-award/>, and the deadline for applications is November 1, 2022. CLAGS Graduate Student Paper Award: Each year, CLAGS (The Center for LGBTQ Studies at CUNY) sponsors a student paper competition open to all graduate students enrolled in the CUNY system. A cash prize of $250 is awarded to the best paper written in a CUNY graduate class on any topic related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, or transgender experiences. Papers should be between 15 and 50 pages. Deadline: November 23, 2022. More details on the prize can found here<https://clags.org/fellowships-and-awards3/#GraduateStudentPaperAward>. CUNY Career Opportunities List: CUNY maintains a weekly listserv that lists job opportunities, internships, careers fairs, and other job search resources. If you are considering a job outside of academics or teaching after graduating, this is a useful resource. When all the shock of white and taffy, the world’s baubles and trinkets, leave the pavement strewn with the confetti of aftermath, the leaves come. Patient, plodding, a green skin growing over whatever winter did to us, a return to the strange idea of continuous living despite the mess of us, the hurt, the empty. Fine then, I’ll take it, the tree seems to say, a new slick leaf unfurling like a fist to an open palm, I’ll take it all.
