[EnglishMA] Reminder to register for summer courses + student services
by Caroline K. Hong 14 Jun '21
by Caroline K. Hong 14 Jun '21
14 Jun '21
Dear Graduate Students,
A reminder that there's still time to register for a summer elective
course! The 6-week summer session begins on *July 6*, and there are still
seats available in Prof. James Richie's ENGL 781 on American poetry.
Also, for anyone who may have missed Pres. Frank Wu's email about student
services available over the summer, please find it forwarded below.
As always, if you have any questions or need advising, please email us both
anytime. Please note, however, that due to summer research/service
commitments and travel, we (and faculty in general) may sometimes be a
little slower to respond to emails.
Hope all of you are taking care!
Best,
Caroline & Hillary, your Directors of Graduate Studies

Dr. Caroline Kyungah Hong

Director of Graduate Studies (English MA)

* Please note that I am off email on weekends and will respond to your
email during business hours, Monday–Friday 9am–5pm, generally within 1–2
business days.

Subject: Student Services during Summer Session 2021
To: <chong(a)qc.cuny.edu>
>From President Frank H. Wu:
There are many student services, both virtual and in-person, being offered
to students at Queens College for Summer Session 2021. I encourage you to
alert your students to these opportunities.
On behalf of the campus community, I would like to extend our gratitude to
our essential staff and all those who make these services possible. I also
wish to especially thank the Office of Information Technology Services,
which supports so many of the services described in this communication.
Academic Advising
The Academic Advising
<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001RbFxsmQNTrHM0ycYQT1q_snPK29TpSXkvqwYv4tvawK…>
office is open for students during Summer Session 2021. Freshman, transfer,
and continuing students are welcome to make virtual appointments, connect
through LiveChat, leave a message, or utilize our e-Advising service.
Virtual appointments are available in the daytime, evening, and on Saturday
by phone or video conference. Dates for future appointments open each
Monday on the QC Navigate app (download it here
<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001RbFxsmQNTrHM0ycYQT1q_snPK29TpSXkvqwYv4tvawK…>).
Students can also ask questions via eAdvising and Live Chat, and voicemails
left on the office phone (718-997-5599) are checked regularly. The webpage
has a library of four-year academic program maps organized by entry year.
New student virtual advising sessions are being held for incoming Fall 2021
freshman and transfer students. You should have received an invitation to
sign up via email. If you have not received an invitation or have any
questions, please call the new student phone line at 718-997-5573 and leave
a voicemail message with your name, CUNYfirst ID number, and a return phone
number, or access our New Student Live Chat
<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001RbFxsmQNTrHM0ycYQT1q_snPK29TpSXkvqwYv4tvawK…>
for further assistance.
The Academic Advising webpage also promotes self-service and answers FAQs
such as:
- how to declare a major
- links to the Pathways General Education courses offered each semester,
as well as during Winter and Summer sessions
- how to register and find winter courses on CUNYfirst
- how to ePermit
- how to file for graduation.
Additionally, the Degree Works degree auditing system is available 24/7 via
the CUNYfirst Student Service Center. Degree Works has a robust “WHAT IF”
functionality, which allows students to explore various major and minor
combinations concurrently. This is an especially helpful resource for
undecided students.

Student Affairs
Counseling Services offers free and confidential virtual services for
students. Licensed professionals offer individualized counseling, groups,
and referrals for those experiencing anxiety, depression, poor academic
performance, and many other issues. They can be reached by phone at
718-997-5420 and by email at counselingservices(a)qc.cuny.edu. Phone calls
and emails are responded to every weekday from 9 am to 5 pm.
For QC students with young children, the Child Development Center is
offering virtual age-appropriate educational services, such as arts and
crafts, dance, science, and academic tutoring for school-age children (up
to 10 years of age) to help prepare them for the return to in-person
instruction this fall. These services are included in the student activity
fee; some limitations apply and registration is required. Interested
students should email qc.childdevelopmentcenter(a)qc.cuny.edu for additional
information.
QC's Summer Camp will reopen this summer for in-person activity, following
CDC and New York State Guidelines. The program, which runs from June 28
through August 20, is widely known for its value, convenience, and variety
of rewarding programs, from sports to classes in theatre, dance,
literature, and the sciences. Children use our athletic facilities—soccer,
baseball and softball fields, swimming pools, and indoor and outdoor tennis
courts. Parents can choose from 2-, 4-, 6- or 8-week sessions with a wide
range of age-appropriate activities to exercise children's bodies and
stimulate their minds. A 30% discount is available for children of QC
faculty and staff. To get the discount, identify yourself as a QC faculty
or staff member when registering your children by phone at 718-997-2777 or
online
