Hello again, all, If you are planning to take ENGL 791 and write your thesis essay (and graduate with your English MA) next semester, please read on! Please start by watching this 13-minute video on "*Preparing for ENGL 791 in Fall 2021 <https://youtu.be/36_Kdwa5zrc>*." In the video, I briefly go over what the thesis essay is, how to find an advisor, how to sign up for ENGL 791 (see the sign-up form attached here), write an effective proposal, etc. After watching the video, if you're planning to take ENGL 791 and write your thesis essay in Fall 2021, please *email me (caroline.hong(a)qc.cuny.edu <caroline.hong(a)qc.cuny.edu>) to let me know and include your 8-digit CUNY ID #*. I'll follow up to confirm that you'll be ready to take ENGL 791 in the fall and then send you the Guide to ENGL 791, sample proposals, etc., and add you to the 791 email list. Dear Graduate Students, We hope you had a restful and restorative spring break! A reminder that preregistration for Fall 2021 English MA courses will take place this week, *Monday, April 5 through Friday, April 9, 2021*. Please carefully read and follow the attached (and pasted below) preregistration instructions and FAQs, which includes a breakdown of program requirements, as well as the attached Fall 2021 course descriptions. (*Please note there has been a time change for ENGL 726*.) As previously announced, the majority of English MA courses in the fall will remain fully online, with a few courses that are designated as hybrid, meaning there will be a combination of in-person and online meetings (ENGL 722, 729, 781-03). Matriculated graduate and accelerated students in good academic standing (i.e., minimum average 3.0 GPA and no outstanding INCs) are eligible for and strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to sign up early for classes. Your full name 2. Your program (MA, MAT, MS Ed, or Accelerated) 3. Your 8-digit CUNY ID# 4. The courses you’d like to register for, with their 4- or 5-digit class codes (e.g., ENGL 636, code 38098) Students may preregister for up to 3 classes. Preregistration requests will be processed within 24 hours and in the order they are received. You will receive a confirmation email once you’ve been registered, asking you to log onto CUNYfirst and double-check your schedule. Preregistration FAQs Who is eligible to preregister for Spring 2021 classes? All matriculated MA, MAT, and MS Ed students, as well as Accelerated BA/MA students, who have an active CUNYfirst account and are in good academic standing are eligible to preregister for courses. If your GPA has fallen below 3.0 or if you’re carrying incompletes on your record from a previous semester, you should seek advising with one of the Directors of Graduate Studies, Dr. Caroline K. Hong or Dr. Hillary Miller, before trying to preregister. If you have any holds on your CUNYfirst account for any reason, however unwarranted, CUNYfirst will not allow you to be preregistered for classes. Please check your account before the start of the preregistration period and make sure that any holds have been resolved. Non-matriculated/non-degree students are not eligible to preregister and must wait to register themselves during their registration appointment period on CUNYfirst. Can I take a course with the same number twice for credit? Courses titled “Studies in…” may be repeated for credit as long as the specific course topics and course materials are substantially different (see course titles at http://english.qc.cuny.edu/graduate-programs/) For example, ENGL 722, 724, 726, and 729 may all be repeated for credit. ENGL 681 (Special Studies) and 781 (Special Seminars) may also be repeated for credit, as long as the specific course topics and course materials are substantially different. ENGL 636, 638, 701, 702, and 703 cannot be repeated for credit. What are my English course requirements? For MA students: - ENGL 701 - ENGL 636 - 7 open electives (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) - ENGL 791 (thesis essay) For MAT students: - 1 pre-1900 elective - 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) - ENGL 781 For MS Ed students (admitted Fall 2012 or after): - ENGL 702 or 703 - 2 pre-1900 electives - 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students) - ENGL 781 For MAT and MS Ed students, what courses fulfill the pre-1900 requirement? In Fall 2021, ENGL 722, ENGL 724, and ENGL 726 fulfill the pre-1900 requirement. Can I preregister for ENGL 791, the thesis course, or ENGL 795, the independent study course? English 791 and English 795 require additional advising and paperwork, so these are not courses for which you can preregister. The Directors of Graduate Studies will announce more information about how to sign up for these courses after the preregistration period has ended.

Dear Graduate Students, Please find attached (and pasted below) the submission guidelines for our annual Nancy Comley Prize, which is awarded to the best essay written by an English MA, MAT, or MS Ed student. We hope you consider submitting something, whether it's an essay you've already written for a class, a work-in-progress, or your thesis essay. Submissions are due *April 26, 2021* . Best, Caroline & Hillary, your Directors of Graduate Studies in English -- Dr. Caroline Kyungah Hong Associate Professor of English Director of Graduate Studies (English MA) Queens College, CUNY *she/her/hers* * Please note that I am off email on weekends and will respond to your email during business hours, Monday–Friday 9am–5pm, generally within 1–2 business days. -- *2021 NANCY COMLEY PRIZE* for the best essay by a QC English MA, MS Ed, or MAT student Named for the long-standing Chair of the English Department, the Nancy Comley Prize was established in 2012 to honor the best essay written by a graduate student matriculated in the Queens College English MA, MS Ed, or MAT programs. The prize is sponsored by the English Department Alumni Fund. All currently matriculated English MA, MS Ed, and MAT students, as well as master’s students who graduated in Fall 2020, are eligible. Submissions should be 10–25 pages in length, typed, double-spaced, in standard 12-point font, with 1-inch margins and page numbers. They must be carefully proofread and formatted according to current MLA style, including a Works Cited page. The deadline for submissions is *Monday, April 26, 2021*. All entries must be submitted via email to MAEnglish(a)qc.cuny.edu. Before submitting your entry, please take careful note of the following instructions: - Essays must be submitted in DOC, DOCX, or PDF formats. - The filename for your essay should read “[CUNYfirst ID number]NancyComleyPrize.” If you don’t know your 8-digit CUNYfirst ID number, please look it up before submitting your essay. - In the body of your email, make sure to include the following information: 1. Your full name 2. Your 8-digit CUNYfirst ID number 3. The title of your essay § Make sure that your name does not appear anywhere in your essay, which will be blind-read by the prize judges, who are faculty members serving on the English Department’s MA Committee. Winners will be contacted by Monday, May 3. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, there will not be an in-person department prizes ceremony. We will announce and honor the award winner virtually.
