Dear Graduate Students,
Hope your semesters wrapped up relatively smoothly and everyone is enjoying
some much-needed rest and relaxation!
I'm writing to alert you to a recent change in CUNY's grading policy, in
case you hadn't already heard. CUNY and QC have announced a flexible
grading policy for Fall 2020 that allows students to convert their letter
grades to Credit or No Credit (CR/NC) between *Dec. 24 and Jan. 12*. For
English MA students, this means, after grades are posted, you can convert
any grade you receive between a B+ and C- to a grade of Credit (CR), and it
will not impact your GPA. (The only course that you cannot choose the CR/NC
option for is ENGL 791.) For more info, please visit
https://provost.qc.cuny.edu/flexible-grading-policy.
As always, please feel free to email both me and Hillary if you have any
questions or need advising. Starting tomorrow, we will be on break and off
email through the holidays, but one of us will be sure to respond early in
the new year. Till then, Happy Holidays and wishing you all a restorative
winter break!
Best,
Caroline

email during business hours, Monday–Friday 8am–5pm. At this time, there may
be a delay in response time.
Dear MA students,
Now that classes are done, we hope your fall semesters are winding down as
smoothly as possible, all things considered. Please read on for some
important end-of-the-semester announcements and updates.
TAKING AN INC
If you are unable to complete a final course assignment and want to take an
incomplete, please discuss this and make arrangements with your professor.
Keep in mind that an incomplete is a temporary grade and should be resolved
ASAP. All INCs must be completed within 1 calendar year (so an INC in Fall
2020 must be resolved before the end of Fall 2021).
COURSE WITHDRAWAL
Another option available to students who may have fallen behind this
semester is to withdraw from a course. The withdrawal deadline for Fall
2020 is *December 13*, which means you can choose to withdraw from a course
without academic penalty till then, and a W will not affect your GPA. (Note
however that withdrawals may affect your financial aid, so please consult
the QC Hub
<https://www.qc.cuny.edu/studentlife/services/qchub/Pages/default.aspx>
before choosing this option.)
REGISTERING FOR SPRING 2021 CLASSES
Please register for your spring classes via CUNYfirst ASAP, if you haven't
already. Courses that are under-enrolled will be under extra scrutiny and
in danger of being canceled by the College administration. There are still
open seats in ENGL 701, 703, 720, 736, 742, and 781-04. Just in case, I've
attached the course descriptions again. Please note that all Spring 2021
English MA courses will be online.
REGISTERING FOR ENGL 791 & ENGL 795
A reminder that, for anyone planning to take ENGL 791 or ENGL 795 in Spring
2021, the sign-up forms and proposals are due by email to
caroline.hong(a)qc.cuny.edu by *Thursday, January 7, 2021*, at the latest.
As always, if you have any questions or need advising, please email us
both, and one of us will respond as soon as we're able. Please continue to
stay safe and healthy, and we wish you a peaceful and restorative winter
break!
Best,
Caroline & Hillary, your Directors of Graduate Studies

Dear Graduate Students,
Hope you are all continuing to take care as best you can and are staying
safe and healthy. A reminder that Hillary and I are here if you need any
advising or have questions as the semester wraps up. We may be a little
slower than usual to respond in these challenging times, but if you email
both of us, one of us should reply within a few days. (If you don't receive
a reply within a week, please feel free to follow up.)
If you are planning on signing up for ENGL 791 or 795 in the Spring 2021
semester, please read on for more info.
ENGL 791: THESIS COURSE
If you are planning to register for ENGL 791 and write your thesis essay in
Spring 2021, please *fill out this Doodle poll* with your full name and
availability for a virtual info session:
https://www.doodle.com/poll/z69ib87rrh8vntpi?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link.
(If those days/times don't work for you, please email us and we can send
you the info and/or meet with you individually.) In the info session, we'll
go over the ENGL 791 Guide and discuss the thesis essay process and
requirements, including how to sign up for ENGL 791 (see the sign-up form
attached here), write an effective proposal, find an advisor and second
reader, etc. It'll also be a great opportunity to connect with your peers
who'll be going through this process with you in the spring. And in the
meantime, you can find general info about the thesis essay on our website
<http://english.qc.cuny.edu/graduate-programs/ma-in-english/ma-thesis/>.
Please note the spring deadline to submit your ENGL 791 sign-up form and
proposal to me (at caroline.hong(a)qc.cuny.edu) is *Thursday, January 7, 2021*.
Once your form/proposal has been approved, you will be registered for 791.
ENGL 795: INDEPENDENT STUDY
If there is a particular topic or field you're interested in that hasn't
been taught recently in our regular course offerings, you can email a full-time
English faculty member <http://english.qc.cuny.edu/people/> with expertise
in that topic/field and ask if they might be available and willing to do an
independent study with you. If they agree, please fill out the ENGL 795
sign-up form (see attached) together with your professor, outlining the
aims, scope, content, and assignments of your proposed study. The spring
deadline to submit your ENGL 795 sign-up form to me (at
caroline.hong(a)qc.cuny.edu) is *Thursday, January 7, 2021*. Once your
form/proposal has been approved, you will be registered for 795.
As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us.
Best,
Caroline
