Hello all, This is a reminder that the Sixth Annual English MA Conference, "The Pursuit of Pleasure," will take place on May 1, 2019, in Remsen Hall 017. There are four panels that run through the day, and a culminating afternoon keynote address and reception. Dear Graduate Students, A couple reminders re: a very busy next week: *ENGL 791 in Fall 2019* If you're planning to register for ENGL 791 and write your thesis essay in Fall 2019, please join us for a workshop on *Monday, April 29, at 5:30pm*. We'll discuss the logistics and requirements for the thesis essay <http://english.qc.cuny.edu/graduate-programs/ma-in-english/ma-thesis/>, including how to sign up for ENGL 791, writing an effective proposal, finding an advisor and second reader, etc. If you haven't already, please email me ASAP to *RSVP*. Even if you're unable to make it, please let me know so we can chat about the process via email or in person. *MA Conference* A reminder that our 6th annual English Graduate Conference, "THE PURSUIT OF PLEASURE, is next *Wednesday, May 1, from 9:30am-6:30pm*, just across the quad in Remsen Hall 017! [MAEnglish] 2019 Nancy Comley Prize Winner: Meaghan Dodson

Our heartfelt congratulations to the winner of the 2019 Nancy Comley Prize, *Meaghan Dodson*, for her essay, "The Laughter of the Mohicans: A New Linguistic Analysis." The faculty judges for the award had an incredibly difficult time choosing a winner this year, because of the high caliber of all the submissions. We're all so blown away by and proud of the brilliant work our graduate students are doing! You're all invited to our annual *Writing Prizes Ceremony* on *Monday**, May 6, at 3pm* in the Godwin-Ternbach Museum, where we'll celebrate Meaghan's accomplishments, as well as those of all the undergrad and grad award winners. Congrats again, Meaghan! Dear All, I hoping you're enjoying this first day of Spring Break! As you may know, the English Graduate Conference will take place all day on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. It's a chance to hear some work by some of your colleagues as well as from graduate students from other NYC-area universities. We'll have papers on Wolverine and Batman, and Sir Francis Bacon and Thoreau, and on films like Wicker Man, A Separation, and If Beale Street Could Talk. There'll be lunch and a reception at the end of the day. The keynote address--"The Art of Overanalyzing"--by Fordham University's Corey McEleney will happen at 4:30 pm. All events are in Remsen Hall, Room 017. You can find a complete schedule and other information on the conference website. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Dear Graduate Students, A final reminder that essay submissions for the Nancy Comley Prize are due today, *April 8*. Please see attached for the submission guidelines. Even if you're unable to make it, please let me know so we can chat about the process via email or in person. *GRADUATION* The 2019 English Department Graduation Ceremony will take place on *Thursday, May 30, around 12pm* (or about 30 minutes after the campus-wide commencement <https://www.qc.cuny.edu/about/Commencement/Pages/Default.aspx>), in the Goldstein Theater. MA students who are graduating in Spring 2019, who already graduated in Fall 2018, and who won't be officially graduating till Summer 2019 are all welcome to participate in the ceremony. No RSVP or tickets are required for the department ceremony, though I recommend you and your loved ones get there by 11-11:30 to grab seats. Graduates should come up to the stage, and you'll be given instructions there. Cap and gown are not required. The ceremony usually lasts about an hour, followed by a small reception with cake. I will send more info in a few weeks, but for now please save the date! Hope everyone's hanging in there--just a couple more weeks till spring break! Dear Graduate Students, Please also find attached (and pasted below) the submission guidelines for our annual *Nancy Comley Prize*, awarded to the best essay written by an English MA, MS Ed, or MAT student. We hope you consider submitting something, whether it's an essay you've already written for a class, a work-in-progress, or your thesis essay. Submissions are due *April 8*. Also, I unfortunately need to cancel my regular office hours this Wednesday, March 13. The prize is sponsored by the English Department Alumni Fund. All currently matriculated English MA, MS Ed, and MAT students, as well as master’s students who graduated in Fall 2018, are eligible. Your submission should be between 10 and 25 pages in length, typed, double-spaced, in a standard 12-pt. font, with 1-inch margins and page numbers. It must be carefully proofread and formatted according to MLA style, including a Works Cited page. The deadline for submissions is *Monday, April 8, 2019*. All entries must be submitted via email to caroline.hong(a)qc.cuny.edu. Before submitting your entry, please take careful note of the following instructions: - Essays must be submitted in DOC, DOCX, RTF, or PDF formats. - The filename for your essay should read “[CUNYfirst ID number]NancyComleyPrize.” If you don’t know your 8-digit CUNYfirst ID number, please look it up before submitting your essay. - In the body of your email, make sure to include the following information: 1. Your full name 2. Your 8-digit CUNYfirst ID number 3. The title of your essay § Make sure that your name does not appear anywhere in your essay, which will be blind-read by the prize judges, who are faculty members serving on the English Department’s MA Committee. Winners will be contacted by Thursday, April 18, and invited to receive their award during the department prizes ceremony on *Monday, May 6*, time and place TBA.
