Hi all, Please read on for info on signing up for ENGL 791 and 795 in Spring 2020. *ENGL 791: Thesis Course* If you are planning to register for ENGL 791 and write your thesis essay in Spring 2020, please join us for an info meeting on *Wednesday, Nov, 20, at 6:00pm* (room TBA). At this meeting, we'll go over the ENGL 791 Guide to the thesis-essay process and requirements (for now, you can find general info on our website <http://english.qc.cuny.edu/graduate-programs/ma-in-english/ma-thesis/>), including registering for ENGL 791 (see the sign-up form attached here), writing an effective proposal, finding an advisor and second reader, etc. It's also a great opportunity to connect with your peers who'll be going through this process with you. The spring deadline to submit your ENGL 791 sign-up form and proposal to me (caroline.hong(a)qc.cuny.edu) is *Friday, January 3*. Once your form/proposal has been approved, you'll be registered for 791. Please *RSVP via email* in the next couple weeks, whether or not you can make this meeting. If you're unable to make it, we can get you all the info and chat about the process via email or in person. *ENGL 795: Independent Study* If you are interested in doing an independent study in Spring 2020 and have already discussed the possibility with a full-time faculty member in the department, please fill out the ENGL 795 sign-up form (see attached) together with your professor. The spring deadline to submit your ENGL 795 sign-up form to Bill (worchard(a)qc.cuny.edu) is *Friday, January 3*. Once your form has been approved, you'll be registered for 795. Dear Graduate Students, A reminder that today is the last day of *preregistration* for Spring 2020. Please see my previous email for instructions and course descriptions. After today, you'll need to wait till your regular registration appointment period to register yourself for spring classes on CUNYfirst. Also, for those of you planning to *graduate* this semester, please file for graduation on CUNYfirst before the *November 1* deadline <https://www.qc.cuny.edu/registrar/graduation/Pages/default.aspx>, if you haven't already. Finally, I unfortunately have to *cancel office hours* next Wednesday, Nov. 6, due to childcare issues. Dear Graduate Students, Preregistration for Spring 2020 English MA classes will take place Monday, Oct. 28, through Wednesday, Oct. 30. Matriculated grad students in good academic standing (i.e., minimum 3.0 GPA and no INCs) should take advantage of this opportunity to sign up early for classes. Please see attached (and pasted below) for preregistration instructions and FAQs, including a breakdown of requirements for MA, MS ED, and MAT students. Your full name 2. Your 8-digit CUNYfirst ID# 3. The courses you’d like to register for, with their 4- or 5-digit class numbers (e.g., ENGL 736, class no. 27021) Graduate students can preregister for up to *3* spring classes. Email preregistration requests will be processed within 24 hours and in the order they are received. We will send you a confirmation notice once you’ve been registered, asking you to log onto CUNYfirst and check your schedule. *Preregistration in Person* If you wish to preregister in person, please see us during one of these times: § Tuesday, October 29, 4:00–6:00pm (see Bill in Klapper 637) § Wednesday, October 30, 2:30–4:30pm (see Caroline in Klapper 604) If you’re preregistering in person, please be sure to fill out the above information on one of the preregistration slips, which you can find at the main English Department office (Klapper 607), *before* you come see us. *Preregistration FAQs* *Who is eligible to preregister for Spring 2020 classes?* All MA, MS Ed, and MAT students with an active CUNYfirst account who are in good academic standing are eligible to preregister for courses. If your GPA has fallen below 3.0 or if you’re carrying incompletes on your record from a previous semester, you will need to schedule an advising appointment with one of the Directors of Graduate Studies, Prof. Caroline Hong or Prof. Bill Orchard, before being permitted to preregister. If you have any holds on your CUNYfirst account for any reason, however unwarranted, CUNYfirst will not allow you to be preregistered for classes. Please check your account before the start of the preregistration period and make sure that all holds have been resolved. Non-matriculated/non-degree students are not eligible to preregister. *How many classes can I preregister for?* All matriculated MA, MS Ed, and MAT students may preregister for up to 3 spring classes. *Can I take a course with the same number twice for credit?* Courses titled “Studies in…” may be repeated for credit as long as the specific course topics are substantially different (see course titles at http://english.qc.cuny.edu/graduate-programs/) For example, ENGL 736 and 742 may all be repeated for credit. ENGL 681 (Special Studies) and 781 (Special Seminars) may also be repeated for credit, as long as the specific course topics are substantially different. ENGL 636, 638, 701, 702, and 703 cannot be repeated for credit. *What are my program requirements?* For MA students: § ENGL 701 § ENGL 636 § 7 open electives (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, *excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students*) § ENGL 791 (thesis essay) For MS Ed students (admitted Fall 2012 or after): § ENGL 702 or 703 § 2 pre-1900 electives § 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, *excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students*) § ENGL 781 For MAT students: § 1 pre-1900 elective § 1 open elective (any English graduate class offered at the 600 or 700 level, *excluding the creative writing workshops and craft classes, ENGL 751–763, which are reserved for MFA students*) § ENGL 781 *What courses fulfill the pre-1900 requirement for MS Ed and MAT students?* In Spring 2020, the following three courses fulfill the pre-1900 requirement: ENGL 736 with Prof. Talia Schaffer (class no. 27021), ENGL 742 with Prof. Miles Grier (class no. 27024), and ENGL 781-01 with Prof. Siân Silyn Roberts (class no. 27089). *Can I preregister for ENGL 791, the thesis course, or ENGL 795, the independent study course?* English 791 and English 795 require additional advising and paperwork, so these are not courses for which you can preregister. Dear Graduate Students, A reminder about the following *important dates* (see the full calendar on the QC website <https://www.qc.cuny.edu/pages/calendar.aspx>): - No classes on October 8, 9, and 14. - Wednesday, October 16, follows a Monday schedule. As a result, Bill and I will not be holding *office hours* next week (Oct. 8-9). I also need to cancel my office hours on Wednesday, October 16. If you need advising during these next couple weeks, please feel free to email or make an appointment. *Preregistration* will be taking place October 28-30. Look out for an email next week with Spring 2020 English MA course descriptions and instructions on how to preregister for spring classes.
