Roots Revival: Performing and Exploring the Music of Northeastern Brazil
Forró is
a popular musical genre from Brazil’s Northeast which is typically associated with tradition, harvest festivals, life in the countryside, and asertanejo or cowboy culture quite different from the engagements with soccer, beaches, and samba which dominate U.S. perceptions of the Americas’ second most populous democracy. Yet today forró has been re-embraced by urban Brazilians and this fascinating genre is undergoing important changes which we propose to celebrate, in light of its longer tradition, by means of an academic conference, dance and instrumental tutorials, and a concert by Matutu Forro Band at 7PM in Queens College’s LeFrak Concert Hall. This event is sponsored by the Consulate General of Brazil in New York and Queens College Latin American and Latino Studies and the Year of Brazil Initiative.
