Dear History students,

I hope you're having a pleasant summer. We're looking forward to fall classes starting, a little less than a month from now.

As you plan your courses, consider that this semester the department is launching a new concentration for the major -- Legal History.

This could be great for you if you're interested in pursuing a legal career, or if you just like reading legal texts as sources for History -- things like court cases, witness testimonies, decrees and statutes, and the like.

The following courses in Fall, 2015 fit this new category:

- Hist 186: Introduction to Legal History: TuTh, 12:15-1:30

- Hist 288: The History of Privacy in America (Topics in US Legal History): MW, 10:45-12:00

- Hist 289: Islamic Law in Colonial Contexts (Topics in Non-western Legal History): TuTh, 9:15-10:30

Look for additional offerings in European, Jewish, and premodern legal history in the coming semesters. Remember that students after 2010 need THREE courses (9 credits) to complete a concentration.

(As a side, note also that Hist 288 would satisfy the US concentration, and Hist 289 would satisfy the upper-division non-western requirement, if those are relevant to you.)
