What and Who: A frank discussion about the ins-and-outs of applying to Social Science grad-school/Ph.D. programs, led by former QC student and present QC lecturer Lawrence Cappello. Prof. Cappello won a five-year Ph.D. fellowship as a QC undergraduate (“fellowships” = full scholarship, health insurance, monthly salary, and a teaching appointment).
Why: Because grad-school admissions is ridiculously competitive, your GPA has very little to do with whether or not you’ll get in, and many of the students you’ll be up against come from colleges that have well-funded centers dedicated to such things.
What Else: Topics will include C.V. building, personal statement writing, how to gather recommendations, how to find the right program for you, application timelines, basic networking, GRE advice, and help with writing sample topics. The discussion will cover numerous themes not discussed in last term’s Grad-School boot camp.
Lawrence Cappello has been a lecturer at QC for the last five years, and is will finish his Ph.D. this Spring at the CUNY Graduate Center. His work centers on American intellectual, political, and cultural history, particularly the history of privacy in the United States.
