Dear students, October is almost here, and it's time to start thinking about your next round of applications for internships if you're hoping to get one for next Spring. Check it out -- we've added a few listings since last year! Some of these internships are paid. *Most deadlines for Spring are at the end of October or in early November.* I encourage you to apply. Internships are key to build your resume during college and as you approach the job market. History-related internship will help you as you pursue a career in education, museum work, public service, and many other fields. Hello again, History majors, One more note -- I wanted to let you know about a new fulltime faculty member who is joining the department this fall. Kara Schlichting -- her field of research is the history of New York City. Her current book is about the waterfront areas of Queens, the Bronx, and the Long Island Sound. She's also working on an article on Flushing Meadows Corona Park. We're excited to have a professor whose area of expertise is our own borough. She'll be teaching a section of Hist 103 on MW at 9:15-10:30, and a section of Hist 285: the History of New York City on MW at 3:10-4:25. Again, let me know if you have any questions. [History undergraduates] study the history of Islamic law in the fall!

Dear History majors, We have a new course offering this fall that is very timely given current events in the Middle East. It's Hist 289, on the history of Islamic law, being taught by Andrew Alger (Tu-Th, 9:15-10:30). Some of you may know of Prof. Alger from his popular sections of Hist 148 and 149. This new course is related to his PhD research and should be very interesting. Note that Hist 289 will satisfy either the lower- OR the upper-division non-western requirement, as well as the new legal history concentration. Let me know if you have any questions about it. Dear History students, I hope you're having a pleasant summer. We're looking forward to fall classes starting, a little less than a month from now. As you plan your courses, consider that this semester the department is launching a new concentration for the major -- Legal History. This could be great for you if you're interested in pursuing a legal career, or if you just like reading legal texts as sources for History -- things like court cases, witness testimonies, decrees and statutes, and the like. The following courses in Fall, 2015 fit this new category: - Hist 186: Introduction to Legal History: TuTh, 12:15-1:30 - Hist 288: The History of Privacy in America (Topics in US Legal History): MW, 10:45-12:00 - Hist 289: Islamic Law in Colonial Contexts (Topics in Non-western Legal History): TuTh, 9:15-10:30 Look for additional offerings in European, Jewish, and premodern legal history in the coming semesters. Remember that students after 2010 need THREE courses (9 credits) to complete a concentration. (As a side, note also that Hist 288 would satisfy the US concentration, and Hist 289 would satisfy the upper-division non-western requirement, if those are relevant to you.)
