Dear History Students, The Queens College History Department is pleased to announce new Academic Excellence Scholarships for Graduate Students. WHAT: Full and part-time students enrolling in any of the Department's MA programs (including Accelerated MA and MLS/MA) for the first time in Spring 2019 or Fall 2019 may qualify for a one-semester scholarship of up to $2,000. HOW: Applicants will automatically be considered for this award if their application, submitted through the QC Graduate Admissions Office, demonstrates a strong record of academic excellence, achievement, and promise as measured by their: · GPA (3.5 or above) · personal statement · three letters of recommendation. There is no separate application for this scholarship, but applicants may indicate in their personal statement that they wish to be considered for the Academic Excellence Scholarship. DETAILS: Scholarship funds may only be used during the semester in which they are awarded. Awardees must complete a minimum of 6 credits during the award period. Your students are encouraged to apply by February 1, 2019 for the 10-month Fellowship that will begin September 3, 2019. Two Fellowships will be awarded with a stipend of $30,000 for each Fellow. The Louis Armstrong Museum Fellows program introduces students or recent graduates in the fields of African American Studies, History, Art, Music, Library Science, and the Humanities to the variety of careers available in the museum field. The goal of the LAHM Fellowship is to educate and train the Fellows in the museum, archives, and education fields as it applies to the functioning of a non-profit historic house. They will be given long-term projects in addition to everyday staff responsibilities. Under the guidance of LAHM staff, they will attend networking events and be introduced to others in the fields of arts education, archives management, and curatorial studies. We are currently in the midst of the second year of the Fellowship, with Aiyonna Aviles (Norfolk State University) and Robert Wright (Bethune-Cookman University). Best, Prof. Celello ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The Department of History at the University of Texas at Arlington announces the 2019 ESSAY COMPETITIONas part of the WALTER PRESCOTT WEBB MEMORIAL LECTURES "EMANCIPATION AND ABOLITION IN THE ATLANTIC WORLD" We are looking for students and scholars to submit original, unpublished article-length essays (maximum 10,000 words, plus endnotes) that explore the above topic. Submissions that engage with current ideas about the "Second Slavery", the contraband slave trade, and abolitionism through a trans-national perspective are especially welcome. Topics may concern, but are not limited to: new avenues of research; new methodologies; questions of public outreach; and the place of the study of Emancipation and Abolition in the transatlantic world both within and outside of the academy. A prize in the amount of $500will be awarded to the author of the winning entry during the 54th Annual Webb Lecture Series on March 29, 2019 in Arlington, Texas. The winning entry will appear in an edited monograph, to be published by Texas A&M University Press. Essays by the lecturers will also be included in the volume.
