Best wishes, Call for Papers Third National Undergraduate Research Conference on Science, Technology, Medicine and Society To be held at DePauw University, Greencastle, IN February 28-March 2, 2019 Keynote: "Revolutionary Turmoil and Cornea Donation: Changing Egyptian Attitudes toward Medicine's Use of Dead Bodies." Speaker: Sherine Hamdy, Associate Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Irvine. Author of graphic novel, Lissa: A Story About Medical Promise, Friendship and Revolution. Handheld devices that are more powerful than home computers. Driver-less cars. Gene Therapy for treating cancer-These are just some of the fast-paced changes in science, technology and medicine (STM) from the last decade. How should society respond to these and other changes in STM from the recent, and not-so-recent past? The Third Annual Undergraduate Research Conference on Science, Technology, Medicine and Society at DePauw University (February 28-March 2, 2019) welcomes student papers that address these and other issues related to STM in historical and present societies throughout the world. As an interdisciplinary gathering, we encourage students to submit papers from across the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences (check out our Facebook page for past presentations: https://www.facebook.com/STMSconference/) Papers may choose to address: 1) how science, technology and medicine (STM) affect societies (past or present); 2) how societal values and concerns (past or present) inform and constitute STM; Or 3) the conceptual foundations and/or ethical implications of STM. Thematic studies in areas such as Historiography, Diplomacy, Military History, Public History, and Digital History are also welcome. Paper proposals should be submitted as an abstract of no more than 500 words. The deadline to submit proposals is Thursday, January 31. All presentations must be between 15 and 30 minutes in duration. Papers for accepted proposals should be submitted no later than Friday, March 15. Call for Session Panelists: All faculty members are encouraged to participate as Session Panelists. Those interested should submit their names, university affiliation, and areas of interest by Thursday, January 31. Optional Events: All conference participants are welcome to participate in a free tour of local historical sites on the afternoon of Friday, April 26. Orangetown refers to itself as “A Town Rich in History” for good reason. Among the local sites of interest are the DeWint House, the 76 House, and Camp Shanks. There also will be an optional free tour to either New York City or the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to be conducted on Sunday, April 28. If interested, please make your reservation no later than Wednesday, January 31. Additionally, all participants are eligible for a free three-day pass to use Dominican College’s new Hennessy Fitness Center from April 26 to April 28 if requested in advance. Registration Fee: The early registration fee is $20 per person if paid by Friday, February 15. The standard fee of $30 per person will be in effect for all registrations made after February 15. For appropriate need-based reasons, the registration fee will be waived. Dear History Majors, Departmental pre-registration for colloquium (392W) courses for the Spring 2019 semester will begin on Monday, October 29, and run through Thursday, November 1st. You must be a history major, and a junior or senior, to register. All students are required to take a 392W in order to graduate with the major. If you wish to register for these courses, you must do so through the History Department (it is best to come to the department in person but you can also call: 718-997-5350). Dear History Students, I know that many of you are saddened and shocked by the unexpected death of Professor Sen. Counseling Services on the 1st floor of Frese Hall is available for any students who would like to discuss their feelings and reactions to this sad news. I know that many of you have questions about what happened. We ask that you understand his family has asked for privacy at this time. We have placed a book in the main History Department Office and ask that any students who wish to share memories of him with his family come and write a message or type something up that we can add to the book. It will be in the office for several weeks. Furthermore, the History Department will be planning a memorial event and I will be in touch with you once those details become available.
