Dear QC History Students, Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I am writing to let you know that I will be serving as the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the History Department this year. My office hours this semester will take place on Thursdays from 1:45-3:45pm in my office, PH 352XX (or by appointment). Please feel free to stop by. I have attached to this e-mail a list of the other undergraduate advisors for this semester. They, too, are available to help with advising matters. Whether you are a History major or minor, I urge you to come and fill out a concentration form with an advisor. We use these forms to make sure that you are on the right path for graduation. Usually we recommend that you fill out a concentration form once you have take 5-6 classes (for majors) or 2-3 classes (for minors). [History undergraduates] Exciting new course: History 286: Law, Crime and Society in Ancient Rome

Dear students - Don't let the heat make you forget about registering for fall classes! Consider, for example, History 286, "Law Crime and Society in Ancient Rome" which can fit either the legal or premodern concentrations: The ancient Romans produced the first comprehensive and scientific system of law, a system of principles abstracted from mere rules that proved to be extraordinary successful and influential. In terms of comprehension, sophistication, and clarity, no other secular legal system can match it, and there are no modern legal systems that aren't in its debt. Because of this the study of Roman Law provides particularly trenchant insights into how law functions in all societies, including our own. The course is a basic introduction to ancient Roman Law covering a thousand year period, roughly from 450 BCE in the Roman Republic, to 565 CE at the beginning of the Byzantine Empire. The focus, however, is on a narrower period, roughly 100 BCE to 200 CE, what is known as the "classical" period of Roman Law. Positioning ourselves in this period we will look back and speculates about the origins and evolution of "classical" Roman law, and also forward to the late Roman Empire, the period when most of the surviving sources for Roman Law were written down. In regard to the law itself, it will be presented in the way it would have been taught to law students in the ancient world, two thousand years ago. In analyzing Roman Law we will adopt the broad Roman distinction between public (constitutional, international, and criminal) and private (civil) law. The analysis of civil law will follow the classic Roman legal categories: the Law of Persons (citizenship status, family, and slavery), the Law of Property (possession and ownership ), the Law of Obligations (contract and delict ), and the Law of Succession (inheritance), and in this order. Throughout the course the changing economic, social, and political contexts in which Roman law arose and developed will be emphasized, and we will determine whose needs and interests the law served. We will discuss the relationship of law to power, and to ethics. At the very end of the course we will consider the uses and developments of Roman Law after antiquity, the so-called "Second Life of Roman Law," from the Renaissance to the period of emerging postcolonial nations in the 1960s, as well as some of the ways that Roman Law has shaped modern legal systems in this country and abroad. ----- Katherine Pickering Antonova, Associate Professor of History, Queens College, CUNY http://www.kpantonova.com/

[History undergraduates] Exciting new course: Crime and Justice in Latin America

Dear students, We would like to introduce you to a new course, History 289, Law, Crime, & Society in the Non-Western World, which can count toward the new legal history concentration, toward the concentration on regions of the world other than the US and Europe, or as the requirement for all majors in upper-level regions other than the US and Europe. This fall the course will focus on "Crime and Justice in Latin America," taught by Prof. Amy Chazkel. It meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:10 to 4:25 pm. This course will take students on an amazing journey through the last five hundred years of the history of justice, crime, and policing in Latin America. Professor Chazkel is a specialist in the history of crime in Latin America who has conducted decades of research and published books and articles on the subject. The class will take students all the way back to the colonial era and reach up to the present day. We will look at the whole region, from Mexico to Chile, from Puerto Rico to Brazil, from Honduras to Argentina, and read about both famous figures and everyday people who made history. Some of the most pressing issues of our day--violence, drugs, inequality, poverty-- have a fascinating past that will help understand how, for example, the massive-scale production and international traffic in cocaine came to be, how oppressed people like slaves and the poor have fought for their rights --and sometimes even won their rights, against all odds. There are no prerequisites for this course, and students at all levels, from all backgrounds, and in all concentrations are welcome. Students who have some special interest in Latin America will certainly find this course a useful way to deepen your knowledge of the region. And since there is no prior knowledge of Latin America required at all, students with no background whatsoever in Latin America will have the opportunity to be introduced to this fascinating region of the world even as they delve into some of the most critical issues of our time -- not only in Latin America but also across the globe. We strongly encourage all students to think about how law and crime in general are crucial to the understanding of history, as well as the pivotal role of Latin America in world affairs over centuries.
