Some of you may be interested in the following event brought to my attention by Professor Convington, which is sponsored by QC Irish Studies and CLAGS: *After Marriage Equality in Ireland* Quentin Fottrell, a journalist for the Wall Street Journal and a member of the Irish LGBT community, will be discussing the recent marriage equality referendum in Ireland and the transformative impact of the yes vote on Ireland and Europe. Dear History Students, I hope that you all have managed to dig out from the snow! The Spring 2016 semester is fast approaching. Don't miss out on these great courses: 1. Prof. Wintermute's course HIST 393/799, "U.S. Military History, 1865-Present" is NOW available to undergraduates (HIST 393). It will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30-6:10. This popular course fulfills the U.S. History concentration. 2. History students need to take a 392W in order to graduate with the major! Prof. Antonov's 392W "Russian Rulers in History and Myth: From Ivan the Terrible to Stalin," will meet on Tuesday, 3:10-5:50pm and still has some spots available. Here is a description: To this day, the power of Russia's rulers often appears to be uncommonly expansive and even consecrated by its centuries-old tradition of monarchical government. This course will focus on the emergence and development of unlimited monarchy as a key political institution in Russia, discussing the ways in which rulers structured their power and presented it to their subjects, as well as the ways in which ordinary individuals - rich and poor - responded to these presentations. We will consider several of Russia's most prominent historical figures as case studies, including Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas II, as well as Stalin, described by one recent biographer as the "red tsar." 3. And don't forgot about HIST 263, "Urban Industrial America" that I wrote you about yesterday! Dear History Students, The new semester is almost here. If you haven't already, please register for your classes! Here are a few more courses that I would really like to draw your attention to: 1. The first is HIST 344, "Global Cities," with Prof. Chazkel, offered on Monday afternoons from 3:10-5:50. This is a brand new course and it sounds fascinating. It fulfills the upper-level non-Western requirement and also counts toward to non-Western concentration. This course explores how urbanism has taken shape in the world's cities, with a strong emphasis on places outside the United States from the nineteenth century to the present. It examines the history, culture and politics of cities as well as the process of globalization that joins cities and urban dwellers in translocal networks and flows that extend across wide geographic space. 2. The second, which I again highly recommend, is HIST 278, "African-American History in the Modern Era," which will be taught by one of our newer, and very popular, instructors, Prof. Bryan Cooper-Owens. Offered on T/Th from 10:45-12:00, this course fulfills the US history concentration. This course continues the history of African Americans begun in History 277. Students will study various concepts/events/movements including: Jim Crow, The Great Migration, The Harlem Renaissance, The New Deal, The "Double V" Campaign, Segregation and the Modern Civil Rights Movement, and The Black Power Movement. Students will learn about African American History through the lenses of economic expansion, social crises, global conflict, cultural movements, political reform and backlash. These themes will frame the unfolding of the 20th century African American historical experience in this survey course. Students will engage the broad complexities, achievements and contradictions that mark the African American odyssey via an in-depth engagement with class lectures course readings (which include secondary as well as primary source materials: e.g. historical documents, speeches and correspondence), and class discussions. Dear History Students, Here is some more information on a great course that I strongly advise you consider taking with Prof. Bregoli. As you'll recall this course fulfills a number of concentrations (Non-Western, Jewish, European) as well as the upper-level non-Western concentration. HIST295: Sephardic Jewish History, Prog. Bregoli M-W, 1:40-2:55pm, in Kiely 417 This course offers an introduction to Sephardic Jewish history and culture, with a special focus on the Sephardic Diaspora in the Mediterranean regions during the early modern and modern periods. Who can be defined as a Sephardic Jew? What are some of the traits of Sephardic culture? How is the Sephardic experience distinctive and different from that of Ashkenazic Jews? Finally, what is the legacy of Iberian Jewry on the modern Jewish experience? To address these questions, we will begin with an overview of Jewish life in late medieval Christian Spain and the events that led to the mass conversions and expulsions from the Iberian Peninsula in the 15thcentury. The course will continue with an exploration of the creation of new Sephardic and conversocommunities and identities in Europe, the Ottoman Empire, and the New World in the aftermath of the 1492 expulsion. Finally, we will pay considerable attention to the upheavals that changed Sephardic life dramatically in the modern period: challenges of modernization for Sephardic communities in North Africa and the Ottoman Empire in the course of the 19th century, modern political forms, the Holocaust of the Balkan Jews, the fate of North African Jews during WWII, and migrations. The course will conclude with a section on the renaissance of contemporary Sephardic life in America, Europe, and Israel.

These courses meet only once a week, which I know helps some students with busy schedules! If you stop by or call the History Office—(718) 997-5350—our wonderful administrative assistants can help you to register. There are spots available in a couple of amazing classes. Please consider taking one of them. Here are the details: 1. HIST 392W: History of Gypsies in the Middle East and Europe, Prof. Richardson, Monday, 1:40-4:30pm This course traces the history of Gypsies from their medieval origins in northwest and central India to their present-day settlements in the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Gypsy tribes, traveling north and west from India, entered Arab and Persian lands no later than the 7th century and only emerged in European sources in the 14th century. Their sojourn in the Middle East has been murkily understood, but we will examine new evidence that sheds light on their history in these lands. Course themes will include: Indo-Aryan languages; persecutions and expulsions in the medieval and modern Middle East and Europe; anti-Roma Nazi rhetoric and the Holocaust; lack of Holocaust reparations for families of Roma victims; poverty; stereotypes and fears; Gypsy law and ritual; and historical relations between Indo-Aryan Gypsies (Roma, Lom and Dom) and Gypsy-like groups, such as the Irish Travellers. We will also visit QCC's Kupferberg Holocaust Research Center and Archives to explore their holdings related to European Roma. 2.
