Dear History majors and History graduate students, The deadline for submitting paper proposals for the 2016 Phi Alpha Theta Biennial Convention has been extended to *Wednesday, November 18, 2015*. All best, Prof. Bregoli *2016 Call for Papers Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society 2016 Biennial Conference January 6-10, 2016, Orlando, Florida * *CALL FOR PAPERS AND PAPER PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS* *SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 18, 2015* Phi Alpha Theta invites all student members and faculty advisors to present a paper at the 2016 Biennial Convention. Proposals from all historical fields and time periods are welcome. The conference is open to faculty and students at all levels including undergraduates, Master’s candidates, Ph.D. students, as well as students who have graduated. There is no limit to the number of paper presenters per chapter, however only one paper per individual is permitted. *All presenters must be verified members of Phi Alpha Theta, if a student wishes to present, but is not currently a member, s/he must be join prior to the convention.* Panels will be arranged based on their general theme, i.e. Cold War, 19th Century Europe, 20th Century US, etc. Please keep in mind when making your travel plans that we are unable to accommodate individual scheduling requests. All paper presenters should plan on attending the entire conference. Once the program is finalized, students will receive a confirmation email providing the date and time of their panel, as well as the contact information for their panel chair, to whom they will submit their paper. *Papers should not be sent to the National Office.* Presentations should not exceed fifteen minutes in length (approximately 8-10 typed, double-spaced pages). All best, Prof. Bregoli *The Margaret Sanger Papers Project <https://www.nyu.edu/projects/sanger/project/internships.php>: summer, spring, and fall internships. * *Now is the time to apply for a Spring internship!* The Margaret Sanger Papers Project has offered summer internships since 1995. Graduate and undergraduate students from universities in the U.S. and Europe have worked with the editorial staff on our microfilm, book and digital publications and received broad experience in historical research and editing. For 2015-2016, we will be offering internships related to our digital and web outreach projects. While most of our internships are arranged during the summer months, we can arrange internship during the academic year as well. We ask that interns be familiar with IBM-based computers, using Windows, have good research skills and the ability to do careful and detailed work. A background in history, women's history, the history of medicine, and XML encoding are desirable. This is a popular program and we often receive far more applications than we can fill. Candidates for these positions are ranked based on the Project's specific needs. General Information Interns work from 10-4 on weekdays only. Interns should expect to devote between 50-150 hours to the Project. This can be arranged flexibly over the summer (either full time for a short period or part time for a longer one) or one or two days during the week during the academic year. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, we are unable to offer payment for internships, though many interns have been able to apply their work for credit at their own universities. *Internship at The Lesbian Herstory Archives <http://www.lesbianherstoryarchives.org/intern.html>* *Rolling applications* *We believe that internships should be mutually beneficial*. The Archives' structure/process combines individual autonomy with group goals and consensus decision-making. We seek to match interns with their interest areas, based on a wide variety of options. However, volunteers (including coordinators) staff the Archives, answer and return phone calls, and do the general work of keeping the Archives functioning on a day-to-day basis, and we expect interns to do the same. Other ongoing work includes: identifying and assigning items to proper subject files and special collections, reorganizing collections for proper preservation, creating signage or updating collection information and labels, answering research questions received by mail and phone, cataloguing video and audio tapes, book collection maintenance and development, three-dimensional object collection processing and maintenance, research in preparation for exhibits, giving tours of the collections to international and domestic visitors, gardening, carpentry, building maintenance etc. In addition to the above, interns sometimes initiate their own projects. Examples of intern-generated projects have included: organization of the graphics flat files, creation of a guide to the special collections, the creation of an exhibit of butch-femme identity exhibit (shown at LHA and in Greenwich Village storefront windows) and cataloguing and indexing of the Lesbian History edition of Frontiers. *Time Commitment * Although there is no limit to how long a woman may intern, we ask for a commitment of at least l0 hours per week for no less than eight weeks (or more hours per week for a shorter period of time). In addition, interns are expected to attend coordinator meetings (two hours every third week). Days and hours of interning are arranged in accordance with the needs of both the intern and LHA. The Archives strives to keep its doors open a maximum number of hours/days a week; interns can arrange schedules for both days and evenings, during the week and on weekends. *Skills * Interns should have a personal interest in and commitment to the Archives' mission. Ease in working with a diverse public is an asset. No specific coursework or academic background is required. An interest in Lesbian Studies, Women's Studies, and/or Lesbian/Gay issues is a strength, as is exposure to women's communities and experience in working in a group environment with consensus. * Supervision/Advising * Archives coordinators include professors, librarians, teachers, writers, community cultural workers, social workers, filmmakers, graduate students, artists, craftswomen, journalists, and translators. An appropriate match between a coordinator and an intern will be established to provide both orientation and ongoing supervision. Interns have direct contact with Archives coordinators and volunteers. Beyond this, interns are expected to be comfortable with working autonomously. Evaluation forms and collaboration with an intern advisor from an academic institution may be arranged. *How To Apply * An interested intern is advised to send a cover letter describing her familiarity with the Archives, her background, areas of interest and proposed internship period. A phone interview, correspondence or a visit to the Archives is conducted in order to determine whether an internship is of mutual interest. Please note: As The Archives is an all-volunteer run organization- it can neither pay interns nor house them. Former QC students Lawrence Cappello and Miriam Liebman, who now teach in the QC History department while pursuing their PhD at the CUNY Graduate Center, will share experience and tips. More info below. *If you're considering graduate school you don't want to miss this!* All best, Prof. Bregoli *History Grad-School Boot Camp* *What and Who*: A frank discussion about the ins-and-outs of applying to History grad-school programs led by two former QC students, Lawrence Cappello and Miriam Liebman, who both won five-year Ph.D fellowships while QC undergraduates (“fellowships” = full scholarship, health insurance, monthly salary, and a teaching appointment). *When*: Wednesday, November 4th, Free Hour *Where*: PH108 *Why*: Because grad-school admissions is ridiculously competitive, your GPA has very little to do with whether or not you’ll get in, and many of the students you’ll be up against come from colleges that have well-funded centers dedicated to such things. *What Else*: Topics will include personal statement writing, how to gather recommendations, how to find the right program for you, application timelines, basic networking, GRE advice, and help with writing sample topics. *Lawrence Cappello *has been a lecturer at QC for the last five years, and is presently a Ph.D. candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center.
