Dear History majors, Don't forget that Hist 392W is a requirement for all History majors. [History undergraduates] new options for History students in the fall

Dear History majors, In response to popular requests, we've created a new late-evening section of Hist 160, which will satisfy the upper-division non-western requirement for majors (as well as the WC category in Pathways). It is Hist 160.03, code 83876, Comparative Slavery and Abolition in Latin America and the Caribbean, taught by Prof. Amy Chazkel on Mondays, 7:30-9:10pm in PH 157. (As it happens, we have now assembled an excellent curriculum for the history of slavery in the fall, if you took this course in tandem with Prof. Cooper Owens's Hist 163, on slavery in the U.S.) Also, Hist 200W: History of the Rule of Law, now will satisfy the U.S. history concentration, as well as the European history one -- it would be the student's choice which concentration to put it in. Remember that that course meets on Tu-Th at 9:15-10:30am. Please let me know if you have any questions. [History undergraduates] some new fall courses in History, and some old favorites!

Dear History majors, Please note that due to popular demand, we've created a NEW SECTION OF HIST 103. It is Hist 103.09, code 83747, on Wednesdays, 1:40-4:25, Prof. Davis-Kram. (You may have noticed that every other section of Hist 103 was full before we did this.) Also due to popular demand, we've turned Hist 200: History of the Rule of Law into Hist 200W (code 83770). That is, we've made it a WRITING-INTENSIVE section, for those students who need to fulfill such a requirement for the college. (In fact, the syllabus for the course is unchanged -- we just realized that it already met all the criteria for W-courses, so decided to make it so.) Also, please be aware that this fall will be PROF. O'BRIEN'S LAST SEMESTER teaching at Queens before retirement. He has long taught Medieval Europe (Hist 100) and the history of Alexander the Great. He's a past recipient of the college teaching award. If you've put off taking his courses, this is your last chance! Finally, note that Prof. Sneeringer (always very popular!) is teaching Hist 308: Women, Sex, and Gender in Modern Europe. This is your chance to study that fascinating topic with the person who wrote the book (or at least wrote A book, and is writing more) on the subject! As usual, please let me know if you have any questions. (And if you have courses in your "shopping cart", but haven't yet formally registered, this is the time to do so, as the first day of the semester approach-eth!) Dear students, Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society, is holding a conference on Saturday November 15 at Roger Williams University, in Bristol, RI. This conference is open to all students -- you do not need to be a member of PAT to present your work, although only PAT members are eligible for awards. Papers can be on any area of history. If you are interested in presenting, you will find further information in the attached Call for Papers. The conference registration fee is $35. The deadline for sending your paper is September 15. Dear History majors, I wrote this morning about Ambassador Tsilas’s section of Hist 392W. There are some other excellent new courses this fall that I wanted to tell you about. New to our faculty this year is Prof. Deirdre Cooper Owens. She earned her Ph.D. at UCLA, specializing in the history of slavery and early immigration in the U.S. Her new course, Hist 200: Slavery in the U.S., will build on her original research. Professor Cooper Owens is also teaching 277 and 278 this year – the two-part sequence on African-American history. All of the above would satisfy the US concentration. Check em out! Also, Prof. Sergei Antonov will return to teach a section of Hist 200: Introduction to Legal History. This is an ideal course for those of you who are interested in law school – it will satisfy the European history concentration. Finally, Myles Mcdonnell will be teaching the two-semester sequence in ancient Roman history next year – Hist 206 in the fall and Hist 208 in the spring. Prof. Mcdonnell (Ph.D. Columbia) is a distinguished scholar of ancient history – the author of _Roman Manliness_ (Cambridge Univ Press). He’s also a QC alumnus who was instrumental in the student occupation of Kiely Hall in the 60s – so he should have lots of great stories to tell in the course of his courses! Highly recommended! [History undergraduates] take a Hist class with the former Greek ambassador to the U.S.

Dear History majors, We're offering a unique opportunity this semester. Loucas Tsilas, the former Greek ambassador to the U.S. and the current Director of the Onassis Foundation in New York, will be teaching a section of Hist 392W. Ambassador Tsilas had a distinguished career in the Greek foreign service that took him to posts in South Africa, Romania, and the European Union in Brussels, before going to Washington, DC. His course, Historical Transitions in the 20th-century, will build on his own experiences in diplomacy and geopolitics in a number of contexts -- the fall of apartheid in South Africa; the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe, and the war in the Balkans in the 1990s. His section will meet on Wednesdays, 1:40-4:25. Remember that Hist 392W is required for all History majors. Please let me know if you have any questions.
