Habemus Presidentum! Did any of you see (or at least smell) the smoke emanating from the History Department the other day? That was the signal that the torch has been passed from one set of History Club officers to another. (Thanks to the Vatican for the idea.) Another year, another peaceful transition of power. Ah, the miracle of democracy. [History undergraduates] attention Pre-Law History students: The Rule of Law

For you majors and minors interested in Legal Studies (or if you're concentrating in European History, or just looking for a super-cool elective...) -- I highly recommend a new course for next Fall. It's Hist 200: The Rule of Law, taught by Professor Antonov. In this class, you'll look at how conceptions of the law have changed over time; how laws have been applied and interpreted; and how legal documents/trials can be used as historical sources. It will meet Tues-Thurs, 9:15-10:30, and it will count toward the European History concentration, or of course, toward the elective requirement. It looks totally great. I tell you, I wish I were still a student.

[History undergraduates] new option for Hist 392W in the Fall

Dear History majors, I'm happy to announce a new option for Hist 392W in the Fall. We're very fortunate to have Ambassador Loucas Tsilas, the former Greek ambassador to the U.S., join our faculty to teach Hist 392W: Historical Transitions in the 20th Century. Ambassador Tsilas is currently the Director of the Onassis Foundation in New York, but before that he had a long and distinguished career in the Greek foreign service. Before his post in the U.S., he was ambassador to South Africa, and before that, he served in Romania and France. In his seminar, Ambassador Tsilas will apply his firsthand experiences in diplomacy to an examination of three 20th century movements in detail: the transition from Communism to Liberalism in Eastern Europe; the transition from Apartheid to Integration in South Africa; and the Balkan Wars of the 1990s. To all History Majors: This is a second reminder that elections for a new slate of History Club officers are scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, at 12:15 in PH 333. A pizza lunch will be served. It is very important that as many people as possible attend this meeting since all four club officer positions—President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary—will be voted on. If you wish to vote in the elections, you must attend the meeting. Likewise, if you wish to be elected to any one of these positions, you must attend. Candidates for each position will be allowed to make a very brief (one minute) speech about their vision for the History Club's future. Please arrive promptly; we only have the room until 1:30PM.
