Dear History majors, Due to popular demand, we are increasing the size of Prof. Conolly-Smith's section of Hist 104 -- a multimedia extravaganza if ever there was one. Note that it is being held on MW, 3:10-4:25 in the large theater in Rosenthal Library (room 230) -- a room with state-of-the-art technology and plenty of room. An excellent and enjoyable way to satisfy the Hist 104 requirement. [History undergraduates] certain MA courses open to eligible History majors

Dear History majors, Several MA courses in the coming semester will be open to qualified History majors. Specifically: Hist 710: Alexander the Great (Prof. O'Brien); Hist 799: Eastern Europe under Communist Rule (Prof. Ort); and Hist 799: Modern Israel (Prof. Alteras). To be eligible, you must have completed 21 credits in History and have a minimum GPA of 3.3 within the major. Hist 710 can be used for the pre-modern/ancient history concentration. Hist 799 (Prof. Ort) can be used for the European history concentration. Hist 799 (Prof. Alteras) can be used for the upper division non-western history requirement, as well as the non-western history concentration. And any of these three can be used for an elective in History. [History undergraduates] two courses Brazilian history -- satisfies non-western requirements

Finally, in time for the Year of Brazil, the History Dept is offering two courses in Brazilian history, both of which satisfy the major requirements in non-western history. For example... Hist 121: Introduction to Brazilian History, Prof. Amy Chazkel, MW 10:45-12:00 in PH 156. This will satisfy the requirement for lower-division non-western history. (You know, that list that includes 105-106, 111-112, 140-142, 144-149.) Hist 294: Music and Culture in Brazilian History, Prof. Amy Chazkel, Mondays, 1:40-4:25. This will satisfy the requirement for upper-division non-western history. And it's the course that we're most excited about -- it will feature visiting musicians as part of classes on how Brazilian music reflects social and political events and trends in Brazil. It will meet in the Aaron Copland School of Music, room 264 -- a fun way to get necessary history credit, with performances free of charge. As usual, let me know if you have any questions. [History undergraduates] Hist 314: World War One, team-taught by Profs. Sneeringer and Wintermute

Another cool course to consider -- in time for the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One, Prof. Sneeringer and Prof. Wintermute are going to team up to teach Hist 314. The course is going to be held in the Campbell Dome (that odd, Star Trek-looking flying saucer parked by Powdermaker) on TuTh, 1:40-2:55. Prof. Sneeringer will present the European context, and Prof. Wintermute, the American perspective. Looks to be a good combination. I personally would love to sit in just to see if they argue with each other... that would be fun to watch. [History undergraduates] Hist 302: Human Rights: Historical and Philosophical Origins

Another exciting course, and a timely one given developments in geopolitics, is Prof. Vincent Carey's new course, Hist 302 (39313). This comes up as European Intellectual History on CUNYfirst, but what it REALLY is (what Prof. Carey is going to focus on is) the history of the concept of human rights. You may remember that I announced last year that Prof. Carey, who has won top teaching awards from SUNY, will be a Visiting Professor for this year at Queens College. He's a renowned expert in the field of human rights, so this is an excellent and unique opportunity for us. Again, let me know if you have any questions. Dear History majors, This is the first of several emails I'm about to send about new and interesting courses that are being offered in the History department in the spring semester. First, note that Prof. Antonov will be teaching Hist 200.01: History of the Rule of Law (39248). This would be ideal for pre-law students, and it will also satisfy the European history concentration. The syllabus looks really fun and innovative. I kid you not: one of the required books is J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It will meet TuTh, 12:15-1:30 in PH 157.
