Gslisadjuncts Waterways of New York Database in NY Heritage Digital Collections
Dear colleagues, Since 2006 students at the GSLIS have been working on digitizing pre-1923 postcards for a database entitled “Waterways of New York.” The initial database utilized the open source software called Greenstone. Subsequently, the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO) hosted the database using the proprietary CONTENTdm software. The database is now being connected through the New York Heritage Digital Collections website [http://cdm16694.contentdm.oclc.org - use Search “Queens College” for easiest access]. We are pleased to announce that, in December 2012, Waterways of New York had 13,625 views! To date, students in the “Introduction to Digital Imaging” course (LBSCI 757) have uploaded 971 postcards [1943 images - front and back] and their related metadata. Students are given credit for their work and a number have used the database to show off their knowledge of digitization to employers and potential employers. Thanks and kudos to the dozens of students who have contributed to this project over the years! Claudia A.
