Gslisadjuncts Course Evaluations are COMPLETELY anonymous!
Dear Students, Ms. Bridget Kavanagh shared with me the concern a number of you have expressed that because you have to log in, the course evaluations are not anonymous. The reason that you must sign in is because it would be inappropriate for a student to submit more than one evaluation for each course in which they are enrolled. However, there is absolutely NO WAY that any link can be made between a submitted electronic evaluation and a particular student. In fact, when the system was first launched and students asked if they could continue to add comments after they had been timed out (since adjusted), we were told that this would be impossible. Once the evaluation is submitted it is not possible for anyone in OCT or at the College to match it up with the person who completed it. This was an essential feature of the design of the system. I am cc'ing both Dr. Eva Fernandez, Director of the QC Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) who oversees the course evaluation system, and Dr. Dean Savage, Chair of the QC Teaching Excellence and Evaluation Committee, to share with them your concerns. I have served in the past as Acting Director of the CTL and for many years on the Teaching Excellence and Evaluation Committee, and have been closely involved with the development of the online course evaluation system. I assure you it is safe and confidential. I urge you to please submit your evaluations because the evaluation period ends on December 15, 2011. Many thanks and I apologize for any misunderstanding regarding the possible lack of anonymity. Claudia A. Perry, MLS, Ph.D Associate Professor Graduate School of Library and Information Studies Queens College, CUNY Flushing, NY 11367 c2perry@nyc.rr.com Dear Students and Faculty, According to the response tracker noted below, only 31.7% of GSLIS students have responded to the QC course evaluations. Please take a moment to complete these brief surveys. We normally exceed a 50% response rate and rank among the top responding departments in the college. This semester we are in the bottom half. Our course evaluations are an important measure for us in trying to improve the quality of our curriculum and our instruction, and were mentioned prominently in the recent re-accreditation report by our site visit team. Many thanks for your cooperation! Evaluations started on November 17, and will continue through Thursday, December 15. Please take the time to encourage students to contribute evaluations for all of the courses they're taking. These evaluations (the comments in particular) are useful in assessing the impact of faculty teaching, and are also part of the supporting materials used for purposes of reappointment, tenure, and promotion. They are also used by students to make decisions about what courses to take. Students who complete all their evaluations will receive $15 credit for printing on their QCard. Students should go to http://www.qc.cuny.edu/evaluate For more information about where to view data and comments from previous semesters, to keep track of this semester's response rate, and to learn about the incentives students get for evaluating their courses, go to http://qc.cuny.edu/?id=M5VB. We now have an online response tracker, which provides current information on response rates by department, at http://www.qc.cuny.edu/Academics/SupportPrograms/CTL/Projects/Pages/fall2011...
