I’m writing to bring two new resources to your attention (see below) and ask if you have any faculty or student research news that you would like to share. I’m interested in anything newsworthy that highlights an accomplishment (student or faculty), a new program that should be publicized, a student or faculty member conducting out-of-the-ordinary research (glowing sea creatures, for example), or anything that the school is proud of and would like to share. In the past we’ve highlighted faculty who have received funding for research, new programs, students representing their school at a conference, and even a breakthrough in a faculty member’s research. The content will be featured on the new Research homepage<http://www2.cuny.edu/research/> and shared on the Research Twitter account<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__twitter.com_CUNYResearch&d=CwMF-g&c=mRWFL96tuqj9V0Jjj4h40ddo0XsmttALwKjAEOCyUjY&r=e0Qh2HLKDZbM0NXKclT9oyMouTYLsyDguiuWxMIto8Y&m=_RSTfM-ROcJVkfUQQEq1o28_kf5yNg1QnwWd51ZxWsY&s=Gt8eywcwiI2gmWqmswoqEyvGwXp3sQETA6ZVEnA7Ni4&e=>. Feel free to send me your story ideas. Please note that all submissions should have a headline and at least two to three sentences stating what the news is. New Resources The CUNY Office of Research is pleased to offer two new resources to the University’s research community. Please advise your faculty, research and teaching colleagues and staff about these exciting opportunities open to the full CUNY community: * Subscription to EurekAlert! (an online global news distribution service operated by AAAS: the American Association for the Advancement of Science) * Membership in the Black Rock Forest Consortium (a 3,870-acre forest and a scientific field station in the Hudson Highlands, NY, 60 miles north of New York City) More about EurekAlert! The CUNY Office of Research strives to highlight the innovative work being generated at CUNY via our homepage/news section (http://www.cuny.edu/research ) and our Twitter account (@CUNYResearch). The new EurekAlert! subscription now allows CUNY research to reach more than 8,000 journalists from 75 countries. Please email your complete press releases (with embargo dates), prior to the publication date and/or relevant inquiries (if you don’t have a press release but would like us to work with you to prepare a press release) to Shanté Booker at Shante.Booker@cuny.edu<mailto:Shante.Booker@cuny.edu> EurekAlert! provides a central location for universities and other institutions engaged in research to share their news with journalists and the general public. Focused on all areas of science, medicine, and technology, EurekAlert! enables organizations to post press releases, images, audio, video and notice of upcoming events: http://www.eurekalert.org<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.eurekalert.org_&d=CwMF-g&c=mRWFL96tuqj9V0Jjj4h40ddo0XsmttALwKjAEOCyUjY&r=e0Qh2HLKDZbM0NXKclT9oyMouTYLsyDguiuWxMIto8Y&m=_RSTfM-ROcJVkfUQQEq1o28_kf5yNg1QnwWd51ZxWsY&s=M4og1rCt62nWOpnKoHIfo24KS2OYdR9_D_k6wSFQbhE&e=> With our subscription, CUNY joins more than 1,000 universities, medical centers, journals, government agencies, and corporations using this service. In addition to statements for immediate release, CUNY can post embargoed news. University press releases will be featured on the site’s public news portal and RSS feeds, and CUNY researchers will be included in the searchable Experts Database. Finally, CUNY can post meetings, press conferences and events on EurekAlert!’s Calendar, and receive reports detailing how often site users view CUNY press releases and researcher information. More about the Black Rock Forest Consortium Our University-wide all-campus membership in the Black Rock Forest Consortium ( http://www.blackrockforest.org<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.blackrockforest.org_&d=CwMF-g&c=mRWFL96tuqj9V0Jjj4h40ddo0XsmttALwKjAEOCyUjY&r=e0Qh2HLKDZbM0NXKclT9oyMouTYLsyDguiuWxMIto8Y&m=_RSTfM-ROcJVkfUQQEq1o28_kf5yNg1QnwWd51ZxWsY&s=DyAazfopBG084EixGjDkRRJ-DLQBWTzySmnluAtziI8&e=> ) will enable CUNY scientists and instructors to propose and conduct research and field laboratory projects at Black Rock, including overnight trips (at reduced per capita rates) to advance scientific understanding of the natural world through research, education, and conservation programs. Founded in 1989, the Consortium collaborates with its members—universities, schools, and scientific and cultural institutions – to engage in scientific inquiry and to create educational programs for K-16 students, teachers, and the general public. The Consortium has helped to preserve the Hudson Highlands as a refuge for wildlife and to secure a wildlife corridor between Black Rock Forest and Schunnemunk Mountain State Park, NY, keeping open migration pathways between more than 117,000 acres of protected land. Consortium researchers have produced more than 500 scientific papers, including 35 masters and Ph.D. dissertations. The Consortium aims to understand the future of eastern deciduous forests in relation to the effects of urbanization on climate, biodiversity, chemical cycles and the spread of invasive species. CUNY investigators could access a wide variety of pristine terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that have outstanding natural resources and/or sensitive plant and animal populations. Other benefits include data sharing and access to long-term records; use of laboratory facilities and scientific equipment; a range of on-site lodging options; and participation research symposia that highlight the scientific investigations taking place in the Forest.
