Welcome to the Fall 2023 term! We’re excited to welcome new and returning students to the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS). A lot has happened in the last 12 months at GSLIS. We received accreditation from the American Library Association, meaning that our program has been continuously accredited since 1968. Thank you to the students, staff, alumni and faculty who contributed to that long but ultimately successful process. This year Dr. Ping Li and Dr. Jose Sanchez will be on sabbatical, and Dr. Shuheng Wu will be on sabbatical in the Spring. While Dr. Li is on research leave, Dr. Johnathan Thayer will act as Vice Chair of the department. We are joined this year by four new faculty members: Brandon Jeffries<https://sites.google.com/view/qcgslis/faculty/core-faculty/brandon-jeffries?authuser=0> will be joining us in the new role of Director of Student Affairs following an impressive career in the non-profit sector. Professor Jeffries will have responsibility for student recruitment, admissions, advisement, retention, and alumni relations. Emily Drabinksi<https://sites.google.com/view/qcgslis/faculty/core-faculty/emily-drabinski?authuser=0>, a leader in critical librarianship and the current President of the American Library Association, joins us as an Associate Professor. Professor Drabinski will be teaching 705: Managing Information Services this semester. Dr. Vikki Terrile<https://sites.google.com/view/qcgslis/faculty/core-faculty/vikki-terrile?authuser=0> is an Assistant Professor with an extensive background in public libraries, especially youth services. Dr. Terrile will be the Coordinator of the Advanced Certificate in Children and Youth Services in the Public Library and this semester she is teaching a section of 702, and 739: Materials for Young Adults. Dr. Nerve Macaspac<https://sites.google.com/view/qcgslis/faculty/core-faculty/nerve-macaspac?authuser=0>, who has built an international reputation as an interdisciplinary scholar, joins us as an Assistant Professor. This semester, Dr. Macaspac will be teaching a section of 709: Research in Library and Information Studies. We are also joined by some new adjuncts this semester: Dr Nancy McGovern<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_McGovern>, a pioneer in digital curation, will be teaching 752: Digital Preservation. Natalie Mildbrodt<https://www.linkedin.com/in/natalie-milbrodt/> of Queens Public Library and the groundbreaking Queens Memory project will be teaching a section of 701: Fundamentals of Library and Information Studies. And activist, artist and archivist Dr Cynthia Tobar<https://www.cynthiatobar.net/> will be teaching a new class on Oral History. This year we will be starting regular student town halls. Convened virtually each semester, these town halls will be an opportunity to hear about developments in the department and the program, and ask any questions you may have. Please look out for town hall invitations via this list-serv. QCLISSA and QCSAA representatives will continue to participate in faculty meetings, which is another opportunity for students to provide feedback on the program. QCLISSA<https://sites.google.com/view/qclissa/home> is the Queens College student chapter of the American Library Association, and QCSAA<https://sites.google.com/view/qcsaa/home> is our student chapter of the Society of American Archivists. Both groups hold exciting professional and social events throughout the year. Participating in their events and standing for election are great ways to build your professional networks and your resumes! Look out for news about workshops, events and mentoring from our careers advisor, Kim McNeil-Capers<https://sites.google.com/view/qcgslis/faculty/adjuncts/kim-mcneil-capers?authuser=0>, and please see our website<https://sites.google.com/view/qcgslis/home?authuser=0> for resources related to jobs, scholarships and support services. Susana and Esther in the GSLIS office are available to help you; they can be contacted at qc_gslis@qc.cuny.edu<mailto:qc_gslis@qc.cuny.edu> Finally, a reminder that the virtual orientation was held last night, and if you would like to see a recording of that, please contact me. With best wishes for a very enriching Fall semester, Dr. James Lowry (he/him) Associate Professor Chair and Director, Information Studies, Queens College<https://sites.google.com/view/qcgslis> Ellen Libretto and Adam Conrad Endowed Chair in Information Studies City University of New York<https://www.cuny.edu/> https://us02web.zoom.us/my/jlowrycuny @JamesLowryATL
