Gslisadjuncts Fwd: Security Alert

Sociology had thefts and had to re-key the offices. John Devereux sent me information about suspicious activity recently. Two years ago, we had thefts of credit cards, computers and books from faculty offices and from the departmental office. Credit cards also were stolen. There was even some fear that the person involved had keys . For example, a faculty member came across him in the departmental office at 7.00 in the evening. He was stealing textbooks. We had good descriptions and faculty members were able to pick out a suspect from photographs. We were also certain that he had accomplices. Things then quieted down. Last week, however, Professor Magda Sokolska came across an individual acting suspiciously outside her office. It was after six. We reported these events to security. She identified him from pictures. It is the same guy. She is, to put it mildly, concerned. As you know, Sociology are also having problems with thefts. I have asked Security to supply the picture of the suspect identified by Professor Sokolska to all Departments. Don Donald M. This is an excellent idea considering the "size" of Queens College. The "perp" obviously knows the campus and quite frankly, the campus needs to provide more cameras, alert buttons and obviously more security personnel to patrol such a large campus. As a CUNY "brat" (my own description) one of the many problems inherent in a large system such as ours is the 'openness' of many of our campuses. Our students need to be constantly reminded as well even though the "perp' may also know student(s) attending the college too. One of the things I have learned over the many years of experience working in libraries is that whenever the city, state and the country experiences harsh economic times, the criminal element looks for what those of us who have law enforcement experience, 'soft targets.' Any cultural or educational institution becomes the 'backup' target for criminal activity. The reasons, I will not debate here as this message from Dr. Surprenant was to alert all staff and faculty of what is happening on our campus and our collective and individual responsibility to report 'any' incident out of the ordinary such as the one described in the message below. I am sure that this does not imply playing "Rambo" Beverly Hill Cop I, II and III, even though I do get thoroughly upset when I do catch someone attempting to take items out at BCC and seriously want to thrash them 'to thy kingdom come' or wherever.
