Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni and Friends of GSLIS, We are excited to announce that, Prof. Johnathan Thayer will give an academic presentation in Room 240 on Mar 1 (Thursday) at 11:00 am. TITLE: Practice/Research/Teach: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Archival Studies The first part of this talk will focus on Prof. Thayer's experiences as archivist at the Seamen's Church Institute, a New York/New Jersey-based maritime advocacy non-profit, and the applications of archival practice for both research in archival studies and archival education. Developing deep familiarity through practice with the Seamen's Church archives has led Prof. Thayer to the subject of his doctoral dissertation, a study of the history of confrontations between merchant sailors and shoreside people, communities, and institutions in the U.S. from 1843-1946. The second part of this talk will be a document-based exploration of this topic, with particular attention paid to the benefits of approaching historical research from the perspective of an archivist. Prof. Johnathan Thayer is a doctoral candidate in History at the CUNY Graduate Center and an alumnus of the Queens College Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. He is a candidate for an assistant professor position in GSLIS. This will be an amazing talk. Please don't hesitate to come and join us. Best K.B. ---- Kwong-Bor Ng (Ph.D.) Professor and Vice Chair, Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, Queens College, CUNY
