Colleagues, Many of you have received one or more automated emails about severance. The email thread below explains why this has happened. It looks like you will receive this email periodically in future, if for example, as has happened here, you have taught in Fall but will not teach in winter (because we don’t run winter sessions). If you and I have agreed that you’re teaching a class, then you’re teaching that class. If a class has to be cancelled because of low enrolment or budget cuts, you’ll hear from me directly about that. I’m sorry that you’ve got and will continue to get these alarming emails, but it seems it’s a legal requirement. I think it explains everything: To clarify the previous email received regarding separation and reduction of hours: Following recent legislation, information must be provided by to employees upon separation or reduction of hours. This new regulation mandates that when an employee separates or has a reduction in hours, CUNY must provide that employee with a written notice of their eligibility for unemployment benefits. The notice includes temporary separations such as end-of-semester appointments for part-time employees (e.g., part-time instructional and non-instructional staff and college assistants entering a break of service). It is expected that part-time staff will be provided with the notice multiple times a year. In short, this notice is in case you need to apply for unemployment if you are not assigned to work in the Winter session, from now until you come back to your position in the Spring semester.
