Subject: Fwd: Course modality: reminder
Please share with your faculty members as appropriate. We are receiving student complaints that faculty members are switching class modality from in-person to online or from synchronous
to asynchronous. It is not ok to ask students whether they are would mind a different modality and switch it. Our students are entitled to knowing what they are registering for. Just as it is not ok to change the syllabus midway, it is not acceptable to change
modality after the semester has started.

Subject: Course modality: reminder
Now that the Fall 2022 semester is underway, there are reports of faculty wishing to shift course modality. In all instances that have come to my attention, the desired change involves a face-to-face
course shifting to a hybrid or fully online modality.
Please understand - and help your Chairs and faculty to understand - that, for sound reasons, faculty may not decide on their own to shift the modality of a section from
its approved modality. Students registered for courses offered in specified modalities and it is incumbent on the institution to ensure that these commitments are kept. In addition, the current NYSED approval of our programs- with literally a couple of exceptions
- does not include distance education at any significant scale. This is consistent with academic continuity guidance from CUNY.
As a reminder, fully remote work authorized by an ADA accommodation is managed by HR, as is FMLA in the case of long-term illness. Faculty with short-term medical issues should work with their
Chair to ensure appropriate coverage of their section(s).
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
