Thanks. Jim James Tasato Mellone Interim Chief Librarian & Chair Queens College Library From: Leila Walker <Leila.Walker@qc.cuny.edu> Sent: Thursday, June 13, 2024 9:29 AM To: James Mellone <James.Mellone@qc.cuny.edu> Subject: Call for Proposals: 2024-2025 OER Initiative Hello, Faculty! Applications<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=s_BgbwZfCU6XFZiduozH2HD13Ce1URRFrZSRbd5rouhUREJZTkVMWTRKSDU5UlRLT1NKNE1MTDRMRSQlQCN0PWcu> are now open for the 2024-2025 round of OER funding at Queens College. Priority will be given to applications received by July 8. Our funding structure will be a little different this year, and, I think, more equitable. Funding will be offered at three tiers: * Adoption of existing materials (if other faculty in your department want to adopt the materials you created through the Fellowship, for instance, this is a good option for them) * Conversion of a new course (formerly OER Faculty Fellowship) * Creation of new materials (a larger award available for individuals or groups creating original or mostly original textbooks or significant ancillary materials) See details below or on the OER and ZTC LibGuide<https://qc-cuny.libguides.com/c.php?g=908303&p=9817627>. Apply today<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=s_BgbwZfCU6XFZiduozH2HD13Ce1URRFrZSRbd5rouhUREJZTkVMWTRKSDU5UlRLT1NKNE1MTDRMRSQlQCN0PWcu>, and please share widely with your colleagues! If you have any questions, or would like to discuss a project idea, please don't hesitate to reach out. With all best wishes, Leila. Description of OER Funding Tiers Adoption of Existing Materials If a faculty member in your department has already created a zero-textbook-cost syllabus or other materials for a course, we are pleased to offer you an incentive to adopt those materials. Expectation: * Teach at least one ZTC section of a course using OER materials created by a colleague * Designate the course "ZTC" in CUNYFirst<https://qc-cuny.libguides.com/c.php?g=908303&p=8780085https://qc-cuny.libguides.com/c.php?g=908303&p=8780085> Compensation: * $500 compensation the first time you teach a ZTC section of a course using adopted materials Selected participants are expected to be in touch with the faculty member who created the materials for pedagogical recommendations. Library support is available to help adapt the existing materials, navigate technical issues, and address any challenges that pop up. Conversion of a New Course (Formerly OER Faculty Fellowship) If you are teaching a course that uses costly textbooks or other materials, and you are interested in exploring OER or ZTC alternatives, we are pleased to offer training, support, and compensation. The OER Faculty Fellowship is being phased out in favor of a more course-oriented approach. The same cohort-based, seminar-style training is still available, however. We are prioritizing the development of standardized, open course materials for large courses taught across multiple sections by a number of different instructors, but proposals for the conversion of other projects are encouraged as well. Selected participants are expected to: * Develop an openly licensed syllabus that meets accessibility standards and uses zero-textbook cost or OER materials * Actively participate in an OER training workshop * For new participants, training will be held across four 90-minute, seminar-style workshops * Previous Fellows will attend one 90-minute refresher (additional support available as needed) * Submit all materials to Leila Walker for a standards check by January 15 for courses running in Spring 2025 and by August 7 for courses running in Fall 2025 * Submit all materials to institutional repository * Assist and acclimate section instructors to the OER course structure * Complete a brief end-of-grant narrative by June 15, 2025 * Teach at least one section of the converted course by Fall 2025 * Designate the course "ZTC" in CUNYFirst<https://qc-cuny.libguides.com/c.php?g=908303&p=8780085https://qc-cuny.libguides.com/c.php?g=908303&p=8780085> In compensation, participants will receive: * $2,000 to the course lead for each course converted * $500 to each faculty member who adopts these materials the first time they teach at least one section of the converted course * Technical support and advisement from library faculty If you have a project in mind, please reach out to me as soon as possible at lwalker@qc.cuny.edu<mailto:lwalker@qc.cuny.edu>. Contingent faculty may participate, but all projects must have departmental support and be overseen and/or approved by the course coordinator. Creation of New Materials In some cases, converting a course to OER is stymied by the lack of available resources. We are pleased to offer incentives and support to faculty to create new openly licensed textbooks in cases where openly licensed resources do not yet exist or are inadequate to the needs of the course. Selected projects are expected to: * Develop an entirely new resource or significantly revise an existing resource * Meet with Leila Walker at least twice a semester until the project is completed to provide updates * Use an open Creative Commons and meet accessibility standards * Make the resource available to colleagues * Submit materials to Leila Walker for a standards check prior to final deposit * Deposit the completed project to one of CUNY's institutional repositories (Academic Works or OpenED CUNY, depending on the type of resource) * Complete a brief end-of-grant narrative by June 15, 2025 Compensation: * Full length textbooks that require the creation of original content for the majority of the text will be awarded between $7500 and $10,000, depending on the scope of the project. * Full length textbooks that require the creation of original content for less than half of the text will be awarded between $2500 and $7500, depending on the scope of the project. * Projects that are not full length textbooks will be awarded no less than $2500 and no more than $7500 depending on the scope of the project. Support: * New participants are encouraged to participate in four 90-minute, seminar-style workshops * Previous Fellows are encouraged to attend one 90-minute refresher Additional support will be provided as needed. Collaborative projects are encouraged. =================== Dr. Leila Walker Assistant Professor Humanities & Digital Scholarship Librarian Queens College CUNY Benjamin S.
