Curriculum Committee Meeting May 1, 2012 Minutes Present: Cooper, Cool, Chelton, Brody Absent: Marnelle (qcLISSA) Meeting began at 1:05 p.m. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved pending description of changes agreed to for 717 which is: From: LBSCI 717. Information Sources and Service: Humanities. 3 hr. 3 cr. Prereq: LBSCI 700, 701, 702, 703. Study and application of reference, bibliographic, and other information resources (print and electronic) in the humanities; techniques and procedures for serving the needs of various clientele in the humanities and criteria for evaluating these sources and this service for developing appropriate collections To: LBSCI 717. Digital Humanities and Humanities Resources. 3 hr. 3 cr. Prereq: LBSCI 700, 702. Study and application of sources, resources, tools, infrastructure, standards, and multimodal entities in the humanities. Includes techniques and procedures for serving the needs of various clientele in the humanities and criteria for evaluation.. Traditional electronic resources will also be included. Justification: Humanities reference and resources and provision of access to them has changed dramatically. The rewording and the content of this course reflects those changes Old business: Submission of final syllabus for Knowledge Management course linking assignments to student learning outcomes. (Kibirige) No response from Dr. Kibirige. Carried over to next meeting. Review of Syllabus for grant-funded oral history course(Alexander) Generally approved except for typos under “Learning Objectives,” and a need to omit extra credit assignments option. The committee was also concerned about IRB compliance issues with oral history interviews and suggested that one way to manage it would be for the professor to be the PI and the students on teams under the PI. The committee suggested that the course calendar be changed to weeks 1, 2, 3 etc. 737 revision to match ALA/ASC competencies (Chelton) The committee agreed that the following would be forwarded to the full faculty for approval: Old description: LBSCI 737. Literature for Children and Adolescents. 3 hr.; 3 cr. Prereq. or coreq.: No pre/corequisites. Introduction to the forms and types of literature; criteria for excellence; techniques for analysis and evaluation; and identification of appeal and suitability for different types of readers. New Description: LBSCI. Materials, Literature and Collection Development for Children and Youth. 3 hr.; 3 cr. Coreq: 700, 701,702 Introduction to the forms and types of literature, including but not limited to both print and digital materials; criteria for excellence; techniques for selection and evaluation for collection development; and identification of appeal and suitability for different types of young users. (Under certain conditions, permission of the instructor.) Students will be able to 1. Demonstrate knowledge of children’s literature, periodicals, audiovisual materials, Websites and other electronic media, and other materials that contribute to a diverse, current, and relevant children’s collection that best serves the needs of children and their caregivers. 2. Develop a diverse collection, recognizing children’s need to see people like and unlike themselves in the materials they access supported by a comprehensive collection development policy consistent with the mission and policies of the parent library and the ALA Library Bill of Rights. 3. Apply criteria for evaluating the content and artistic merit of new children’s materials in all genres and formats, standard library selection and review sources, as well as how to select and discard materials according to collection development, selection, and weeding policies. 4. Address materials against community challenges. The committee suggested asking Margaret Tice for sample lessons to go along with this change. Progress on proposed 790 Uses of Knowledge course (Marcum) Dr. Marcum informed the committee that, because of lack of enrollment, work on this course had temporarily stopped. Request for written statement to Dr. Li because of the cancellation of her summer school course. Two committee members volunteered to draft on behalf of the committee and give to Dr. Marcum for Dr. Li. 700 and 706 discussion The chair was directed to set up a meeting with the Technology Committee. Rewritten course descriptions and justification for 738 and 745 as Special Topics course (Brody) Carried over to next meeting 702 course revisions (Brody) Carried over to next meeting. Proposal for a new certificate (Brody) Carried over to next meeting. Inconsistent lists of courses Dr. Brody pointed out that once again, the list of courses on the website, in CUNYFirst, and the list being given to students by the office staff did not match the changes approved by the GCC and Faculty Senate last fall, and that the committee will have to do a comparison to get it all straight. Dr. Chelton was to gather all the lists for further action. New Business Course proposal form The chair will follow up with Dr. Marcum about getting a copy from Dr. Lester.
